My question is: is it reasonable to believe the captain could disable the transponder, but could not disable the air phones?

Also, I flew on a 777 to Hawaii last year, and there were no air phones. The seat backs had entertainment systems on our flight.

Seriously, the 99% most likely scenario is this aircraft went down. The tinfoil hat stuff is fun to kick around, but these people probably all died.

yep... I agree... it's just kicking around possibilities.... but there are some on here that are seriously that nuts thinking Nasa doesn't exist because of this, aliens... China blew it up.... everything.

Search for missing Malaysia Airlines plane expands to Indian Ocean

It's a mystery that authorities still haven't been able to solve: Where is Malaysia Airlines Flight 370? There were still more questions than answers Thursday as U.S. officials said investigators will start combing the Indian Ocean as they look for the missing aircraft. Why would authorities expand their search rather than narrowing it?

New information, U.S. officials told CNN, indicates the missing airplane could have flown for several hours beyond the last transponder reading. Malaysian authorities believe they have several "pings" from the airliner's service data system, known as ACARS, transmitted to satellites in the four to five hours after the last transponder signal, suggesting the plane flew to the Indian Ocean, a senior U.S. official told CNN. That information combined with known radar data and knowledge of fuel range leads officials to believe the plane may have made it to that ocean, which is in the opposite direction of the plane's original route. "There is probably a significant likelihood" that the aircraft is now on the bottom of the Indian Ocean, the official said, citing information Malaysia has shared with the United States.

It's the latest twist in a case that's baffled investigators and grabbed global attention for days since the plane disappeared on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Information about the missing flight has been hard to come by, and numerous leads have been revealed by some officials only to be debunked by others hours later. This new information led to a decision to move the USS Kidd into the Indian Ocean to begin searching that area, the official said. The Navy destroyer is now on its way there at the request of the Malaysian government, Cmdr. William Marks of the U.S. 7th Fleet told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Thursday. "We're not out here freelancing, and it's not just something the U.S. Navy thinks and no one else," Marks said. "So this was by request of the Malaysian government. They asked the Navy to move our ship to the west into the Strait of Malacca. ... It is coordinated, but certain ships and aircraft stay in the east, and some go to the west. And we're moving to the west."

It won't be easy. Moving into the Indian Ocean, Marks said, is like going "from a chess board to a football field." The Indian Ocean is the world's third largest ocean, and in most places it's much deeper than other areas where search crews have been looking. "It's a completely new game. ... Now we have to come up with a new strategy, new tactics," he said.

Then the transponder signal that the plane was sending to ground-based radar stations went silent. Other U.S. officials said their information did not reveal what direction the plane flew — or whether it simply circled — during those four hours. That much additional flight time could have put the plane somewhere over the Indian Ocean, far from its Beijing destination, prompting officials to consider whether the search area should be expanded. Malaysian authorities have said they are investigating all passengers and crew aboard, but denied local media reports on Thursday that they searched a home of one of the pilots.

A modern airplane sends information in a steady stream to its owner, the company that built it or the firm that built its engines. In the final minutes before Air France Flight 477 plunged into the Atlantic almost five years ago, it sent 29 automatic error messages to the airline’s home base in France. The Wall Street Journal first reported that U.S. investigators suspect that the engines on the Malaysia Airlines flight kept running for up to four more hours after the plane reached its last known location. The newspaper later corrected its report to say that this belief was based on satellite data that was designed to report on the status of some onboard systems, not signals from monitoring systems embedded in the plane’s Rolls-Royce engines. The Malaysian government denied the initial report.

In Washington, one senior administration official said the signals came from the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), with which planes maintain contact with ground stations using radio or satellite signals. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, said Malaysian authorities shared the flight data with the administration. The fact that the signals did not reveal the plane’s location suggested that it came from the engine.

The question is, hijacked by whom. Why didn't the hijackers start asking their demands soon after they hijacked the plane? Striking is is why the media is paying so much attention to this disappearance? On the Air France crash a couple of years ago not that much media attention. What is the difference?

hijackers ain't for demands.

the disappearance of this flight 370 is planned.
my guess is that the plane will surface, no one is dead, but, maybe
not all those aboard would be accountable.

looks like the disappearance of flight 370 is a test case.

no evidence of debris has surfaced.
no single sign of communication is heard.

a flight departed, it disappeared, days now and nothing
substantial has appeared despite the joint effort of
almost everybody, evidently speaking, something productive to the
interests of the holder of the plane is shaping up already.

does this sound like a holywood blockbuster?
