The Francis Scott Key Bridge along I-695 in Maryland collapsed into the Baltimore harbor following a "ship strike" early Tuesday morning, setting off a search and rescue mission for those inside vehicles that plunged into the chilly waters.

A livestream of the bridge appeared to show a cargo ship colliding with a support beam, causing the bridge to break apart and fall into the Patapsco River. Officials said "upwards of seven" people were missing and that two had been pulled from the water. Multiple vehicles were on the bridge at the time, but no update on casualties has been offered.

Paul Wiedefeld, secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation, told reporters early Tuesday that the FBI was on scene investigating what caused the ship to ram into the bridge and determined it was not linked to terrorism.

Oh boy, pretty nuts. Amazing how quickly it came down. It's a good thing we have experts like Pete Buttigieg that will be on scene in a year or so to help everyone recovery.

Very curious how this happned. TV news in baltimore says two experienced pilots were taking the ship out.

What seems to have happened is that the ship lost power. But that is not confirmed.

It seems to have lost the ability to steer or reverse engines to slow down. It simply coasted into the bridge. It's believed the pilots were doing everything they could to avoid the collision but without power there was nothing they could do.

Hopefully more details will come out soon

I wonder if it was an attack. I hear the ship lost power, which is something that might have been caused by a hacking attack. It's also interesting timing-wise since we're just days after the ISIS-K attack on Russia and Putin and friends blaming it on us as well as Ukraine. Maybe they did this as retribution.

Before I opened the thread, I knew it would turn political in the opening post. Now, waiting for the "Biden did this" posts.

So they are first on the scene
    …Bad

    Make a press conference
    …Bad

    Send advance teams
    …Bad

Support bills to prevent repeat evens
    …Bad

I am picking up a trend that no matter what happens, what is done or not done — people on the far ends of the spectrum will remain partisans.

I am glad they are on this though — this could case major economic damages for the port and we need to find out how it happened and how to prevent it. A major infrastructure overhaul was needed in this country 20 years ago.

Hopefully the boat had good insurance

Apparently not — it was predicted by the original poster it would take him a year to respond and he did within hours.

    But ok

I am glad y’all derailed the thread almost immediately though, in typical fashion.

It will be a long time before any vehicle will be able to cross that bridge. It might be like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge from many many years ago.

It is a loss of life of workers working on the bridge and some cargo ship ran into the bridge and it lost control and there wasn't anything anyone could about it. so there.

Biden gave a nice pledge of support. He also gave some nice personal testament of having used the bridge regularly.

    https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/bid...-collapse-baltimore-harbor/story?id=108510121

President Joe Biden gave remarks Tuesday on the Baltimore bridge collapse, telling residents "we're going to stay with you as long as it takes."

"It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstruction in that bridge. I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said from the White House.

"This is going to take some time," the president said, adding, "We're not leaving until this job gets done."

That prediction was made based on Butti's reputation.

Buttigieg's "reputation" in MAGA world is entirely based on RW media smears. In other words, them screaming "where is Buttigieg" after the East Palestine disaster, which, after Trump had is moment In the sun, was actually handled well by Buttigieg and the EPA.

BTW: Why hasn't Trump commented on the Maryland bridge disaster? Or, is he too busy counting his bucks after Truth Social went public?

I wonder why Lyman didn't just flat out state that she is incompetent because she is black. That should get him far in MAGA world. They get braver and braver in saying the quiet part out loud.

Fox News already started blaming this on Biden within a few minutes after they got video. Maria B blamed Bidens border for the cargo ship hitting the bridge. LOL

While the function of cargo ships are becoming increasingly more dependent on computing systems and satellite communication, the ship's power source itself cannot remotely be shut off mid journey by hackers. A plane or a ship can effectively be grounded by hackers, but not in the sense of having their power shut off while traveling, think more in terms of having certain navigation systems being sent false information, and thus being rendered useless. Ports and airports are actually more vulnerable than the plane or ship itself
