is it common for all these judge vacancies to be out there? like this is normal ? or did the senate delay a bunch of appointments during the obama era and now they are being backfilled. just asking because it's always coming up, and after 8 years of obama it seems odd that there would be so many. I know diddy squat about judicial appointments except for scotus.

It's normal. The abnormal part of the situation is that (dirty) Harry Reid opened the door for the "nuclear option" and we have taken full advantage of the situation caused by their craving for short term instant gratification. It has made appointments of judges a lot easier and faster than it used to be. Thanks (Dirty) Harry Reid.
