Awesome! You could easily have said that was Iraq, looks like it. So you handled the SAW on your fireteam?
Well, that was an interesting story there by itself. I had just joined the unit, and since I had an Infantry and Security background, they put me in the Recon-Force Protection platoon. And actually having been a SAW gunner in the Marines, that made sense. The 1st Sergeant had all of the SAWs in the battery assigned to our platoon. So over half of the platoon carried SAWs. When the Platoon Sergeant set up that picture, he actually did it rather artistically. As the oldest and most experienced, he put me in the back. In front of me was a PV2, who had turned 18 in training and was the youngest in the platoon. Those that knew this said either it was the younger generation taking up the duties of the older one, or the older generation guiding the younger one. The Sergeant never said, but knowing him one of the two was likely right. Either way, I always thought it was an awesome shot. I want to eventually make a poster of it for my wall.

Outside of Kabul, Afghanistan; indicative of the challenges of flying in Afghanistan. If a C-130 takes on a mountain, it's going to lose every time.
What are you talking about? Most of the Army still doesn't have the newer helmets and every single unit I was ever in had K-pots.
You mean...what are you talking about. ACH/MICH: replaced this.... PASGT: The high cut and no brim MICH is different from the PASGT. The only two remaining helmets in military service being the Army-style ACH/MICH and the Marine LWH. An occasional National Guard or Reserve individual may wind up in-country with the older PASGT, but that likelihood is diminishing rapidly.
In frontline combat units sure. The Combat Support and Combat Service Support units still have PASGT's.
I make no claims to be an Army "helmet" expert....but if for no other reason I recognize the camo pattern in the photo as Desert Storm era. That much I do recognize. Most of the Army or Marine helmets I saw in the later years did not appear to have brims and the nape of the helmet was shorter. As far as specifics as to what units had them and what didn't....I have no idea. I do know the PASGT is being phased out.
The Desert Storm pattern is DBDU which was phased out in the 1990's. It's a six-color pattern. This is the DCU which was used up until around 2005... The DBDU has the distinctive "chocolate chips" in the pattern, the DCU replaced this in 1993. The DCU has the "coffee stained" pattern. It's two different patterns. The DCU second standard issue desert camo was the uniform of U.S. military from the early 1990s to the early 2000s... I guess the photo is closer to DCU on a second glance however... It just reminded me more of Desert Storm with the Fritz helmets...
