And yet they fail to produce enough of anything. Soon like Venezuela or Cuba they produce almost nothing that anyone wants.

 

It is a simple leadership problem. A leader has no excuse, with a Command Economy, to not command economize that Economy to Prosperity. A simple commandment, is All that is required.

I suspect America's odd culture of 'chain restaurants' is just that, odd. I've not really seen or heard of it anywhere else. What strikes me as bizarre, is that such businesses are not running FOOD establishments, they're running business businesses. Normally, people get into food because they're passionate foodies, and are very good at ... food. When non-foodies get into the restaurant game, you end up with a very poor result. Why on earth anyone would pay money for the incredibly low grade stuff that comes out of those places is beyond me to comprehend. How are they (customers) not able to discriminate between the dumbed down non-foodie product of those chain places, and an actual restaurant? Can they not tell the difference? And if that is the case, how? Worse, the decor and styling of such places is stunningly awful. Like vast, cheap, cheesy, 1990's airport diners.

Small cafes run by dedicated foodies will always be much better.

 

This is either the apex of arrogance or ignorance or both. All chains have lousy food and all small cafes have excellent food? You must not eat out often. First, there are dozens of chain restaurants in Europe. Most started out as mom and pop restaurants. They got to be chains because their food is very good. They stay in business because people like their food. They have advantages because they can afford to advertise more, they buy their food in bulk, they buy all their equipment in bulk and are efficient in setting up.

Where do you get this nonsense that people get into restaurants because they are "passionate foodies". Few business require more work than a restaurant. They work long hours in hot sweltering kitchens. They are plagued by countless regulations. They have to throw away thousands of dollars worth of product. People are in the restaurant business for the same reason people are in any business, to make money.
