Elon Musk said Monday he's moving to require all users to pay a monthly fee to use his social media site X, previously called Twitter.

Why it matters: The comments, which he made during a live-streamed event on X with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, come as the company struggles to regain trust with advertisers.

Driving the news: During the live conversation, Netanyahu brought up the challenge of preventing large armies of bots that amplify hate speech.

    • Musk replied: "The single-most important reason we're moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X system is it's the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots."

The vast majority of users log into Facebook or Twitter (X) because they are free of charge. Once Twitter (X) starts charging monthly fees on everyone on the platform, the number of users will drop by 80%, migrating to Instagram and Threads.

Well if he wants to bankrupt the company, he couldn't come up with a better way to do it than that.

he wants to verify who everyone is via a credit card to end anonymity on his site

advertisers pay more for real data as well if they can link it to a consumer db

though not sure how many will pay

would keep people from having multiple accounts though

Not giving Nazis a pulpit and not appeasing Putin's nonstop attack on Western democracies might help a little bit.
All I know is, I sure am glad my @threads desktop dealio has some functionality now.

Funny thing about how the richest man on the planet can't seem to hire a person more knowledgeable about security to tackle the problem.
It's the only way HE can think of because for Elon, it always boils down to HIM and ONLY him, and as long as it has a bunch of the letter X and some other odd symbols attached to it he's happy.

XX Whizbong-meccanica X AE 000X oblong ass-nozzle 64X pantload fizz Boring XX -----I bet that means something in Muskspeak.
Probably the end of the world.

During an online discussion on his X platform (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk has proposed "restoring normal relations" with Russia by ceding parts of Ukrainian territory to it, The Wall Street Journal reported on Oct. 23.

He also proposed holding a "vote" in occupied territories of eastern Ukraine to determine if these regions would wish to be part of Ukraine or Russia. He asserted that some parts of the occupied territories would “definitely” want to be part of Russia. Musk also stated that Ukraine is not making "territorial progress" and that the battlefield situation is "hopeless;" thus, a "ceasefire," in his view, would be the "best outcome."
