Indeed. Tonight's news reported 13 doctors died so far in northern Italy. Just like Medics in the military, these people look death in the face every day.

don't forget those working in nursing homes, memory care, and other geriatric settings. Most patients with this virus won't end up in a hospital. They will 'hunker down' in place and that means in an institutional settings like those above. Staff will continue to care for them, clean up after them, feed them and offer emotional support during their extended quarantine. Families and friends will have to make do with phones, and videochats.

You don't think that there's a possibility that what he said is true? Why? You don't really know anyone here. You don't even truly know anyones politics here. Yet you act as if you would be amazed if what he said were to be true. Why?

At least that is the impression I get from your post.

Thread of the day. They are heroes, going to work everyday, facing possible death, helping people, while the rest of us sit in the safety of our homes.

The cleaning staff are the lowest paid and yet they run at least the same risk as everyone else in those hospitals. They are actively removing the virus from surfaces with probably the least protection of all.

They probably don't have sick leave or even health insurance and must still go home and care for their families.

Yes, everyone does deserve our thanks and gratitude for what they are doing but the cleaning staff are doing the grunt work that is ESSENTIAL for the health and safety of everyone else at those hospitals.

because its not up to me or you to disprove an accusation like that. its his assertion without proof, not mine. your point that we don't anything about each others lives is exactly mine.

I should also have extended my thanks to the tens of thousands of volunteers who go into our nations hospitals UNPAID to perform many routine tasks like wheeling beds with patients from one location to another, run snack bars for hospital visitors. Some are high school students, while many are senior citizen retirees. My thanks to one and all.

One of the effects of this pandemic, is to put in sharp contrast those we traditionally see and celebrate as 'heroes' and those we don't. We tend to laud those who knowingly put their lives in immediate and clearly visible peril for strangers or an abstract ideal, and those who knowingly put themselves in less immediate and visible peril for strangers or an abstract ideal. Quite rightly we honor our firemen, our police, our military for their bravery in the face of potentially violent and immediate peril. We constantly thank them for their service, and normally we provide them some of our best medical care and bereavement benefits to loved ones. Their funerals are treated differently when they die in the line of duty. We do this because they see the flames, smell the smoke, hear the gunshots, and march directly into places of imminent and unavoidable risk and we can see the flames, imagine the smoke, and hear the cannon-fire from our television sets and laptops.

If you watch the news, the stories of bravery from a couple of high school kids running in to help a old woman out of a burning building or a woman jumping into whitewater rapids to help an 11 year old boy fallen out of a boat, or a group of people wrestling a gunman get similar treatment if less formal treatment. So often all they say, is that there was no 'decision' at all. It was an instinct that took over, no calculation of risk involved. They don't see themselves as heroes at all. They think anybody would have done the same thing. But we all know better than that. So they get that feel -good story in the paper, they are lauded and we do make an effort...

The heroes we are talking about here are not treated like this at all. I have never seen a gun salute or a folded flag of a nursing aide who bathed a woman with a potentially lethal and contagious disease and nobody ever organized a relief fund for a home health nurse who caught AIDS, cleaning up blood or vomit from a dying 24 year old, getting hospice care in his apartment in the mid 80's and I doubt we will see a charitable fund for a housekeeper who ends up with in ICU for a month and loses her home, her job, and her savings to medical bills. In one sense, these acts are less 'brave' because they do not 'know' that any specific patient or any specific situation will end up with an infection, but they know that the risks increase with each bedpan, each patient, and each exposure. They are throwing the dice every day they show up. What really makes this different is that they bring that risk home to their loved ones. Cops will never bring gunfire near their kids, and firemen cannot bring flames near their mother.

We need to treat these heroes better, and in many cases we need to pay them more.

It is easier to believe people who don't constantly make crackpot arguments.

Or is this whole Corona thing a hoax after all; you know, like climate change?

    AMEN!

They are the heroes of this challenge along with home contracting services, truckers and shelf stockers.

The Virus is Exposing Who’s Irreplaceable.

The absence of millions of high-paid Americans are hardly missed either by the public or count much in subsequent economic analyses of damage to the economy.

Is it more existentially valuable to know how to fix a toilet, replace a circuit breaker, or change a tire, or to be a New York fashion designer, a Hollywood actor, or a corporate merger lawyer?

So who is important and who not?

We were often told globalized elites on the coast were the deserved 21st-century winners, while the suckers and rubes in-between had better learn coding or head to the fracking fields.

But who now is more important than the trucker who drives 12-hours straight to deliver toilet paper to Costco? Or the mid-level manager of Target who calibrates supply and demand and is on the phone all day juggling deliveries before his store opens? Or the checker at the local supermarket who knows that the hundreds of customers inches away from her pose risks of infection, and yet she ensures that people walk out with food in their carts? The farmworker who is on the tractor all night to ensure that millions of carrots and lettuce don’t rot? The muddy frackers in West Texas who make it possible that natural gas reaches the home of the quarantined broker in Houston? The ER nurse on her fifth coronavirus of the day who matter-of-factly saves lives?

Do we really need to ask such questions of whether the presence of the czar for diversity and inclusion at Yale is missed as much as the often-caricatured cop on patrol at 2 a.m. in New Haven?

    No, no we don’t.

And I'd like to thank all the Americans calmly stepping up and helping those around them. Those that do not know and understand us always predict that we will panic, but that is not how Americans respond. We dig deep, bonds quickly reform and we pull together.

    The Fools Of Apocalypticism.

People’s refusal to panic has been a great source of frustration for the establishment in recent years.

Our skittish elites have been so baffled, infuriated in fact, by our calm response to their hysterical warnings that they have invented pathologies to explain our unacceptable behavior. The therapeutic language of ‘denialism’ is used to explain the masses’ refusal to panic.
Soviets used to declare dissidents to be insane, so there’s nothing new here from those that hate us for our Freedom and Liberty

I should have also included our law enforcement who are out there working every day protecting us.They seem to be stricken extremely hard by the virus.
