As a liberal one of the things I hate most is imposition of moral precepts by law. It inherently discriminates against people with different beliefs for purely arbitrary reasons and just makes life (*)(*)(*)(*)tier for more people than is necessary. I like to think Im always up for a big debate but sometimes I just dont feel it worth the time. So here's my short and sweet response to any moralizing social commentator raving about how immoral everyone else's actions are: Q: Are you advocating passing a law to make me follow your moral code? If "Yes": Give the basic and rather effective utilitarian argument for freedom of action. If they dont see your point, theyre an idelogue and theres no bargaining with them. Stop talking to them but keep an eye out - if they try to gain power of some kind, yiu're guaranteed trouble. If "No": State that means you're not required to care what they think or what they want and thus will not do so, and theres nothing they can do about it, so they can go bother someone else. Mind you, this will make them quite angry; whether placating them is important is up to you.
