    That's the question.

How far can people go on Twitter?

And were this a white professor going off on Obama, what might happen?

I can't imagine Rutgers is particularly thrilled about her thrusting them into the spotlight.

The question now is what they're done in similar past situations.

The question is what has Rutgers done in the past in such situations?

Also, how much government funding/support do they receive in ALL forms?

Also, what have similar institutions done in such situations.

Did a university professor say this on social media?

    What happened if so?

To prove they possess these human qualities, they should become supporters of Biden; he gropes children, wants to cut social security, raped a woman, loves war & absolute corporate power, and has dementia.

The most thoughtful take so far.

Does Rutgers have a social media policy to which she is subject?

    Welcome! :)

    I think the questions are:

    - What has Rutgers done in similar past situations?

    - What are its social media policies, if any?

    - What should Rutgers do, if anything?

The uni can't be happy about the negative attention, and this could have far-ranging consequences for many at the uni.

Is the president a tenured employee?

    A professor at a government-funded university?

    This is quite well said.

The professor has created a crapstorm for Rutgers, and students may indeed have the right to be granted different placement.

The implications involved in students demanding such different placement as a result of this professor's outrageous views/utterances?

The educatioal crapstorm to end all educational crapstorms.

Rutgers is likely very, very, VERY unhappy with her.

Whataboutism at its most wildly irrelevant, horribly analogized and deliberately derailing.

The question is well-framed by MoPa.

This woman has created a crapstorm with far-reaching implications.

It'll be interesting to see what Rutgers does.

    THAT is the question.

At best, she used HORRIBLE judgment, has cost the university millions, and put them in the middle of an enormous crapstorm.

    They are undoubtedly VERY unhappy.

It would be 24/7 on the MSM there would be calls for Trump and every prominent Republican to disavow it else they be tied to it and the Dems/Left would want him charged with a hate crime of some sorts and immediately fired.

Exactly, I'm glad you get it. It's about how much free speech a professor is allowed to have. Like her or not, she's voicing an opinion and by all accounts as a private citizen she is allowed to do that. But because she's a public figure that makes her accountable. The issue is then balancing these two.

That also being said, no. She's allowed to say whatever she wants, because that's who she is and her opinions matter.

    That's certainly not unreasonable.

But any policy must be consistent across the board.

It all pretty much comes down to Rutgers policy on social media/outside the classroom speech & conduct.

If they didn't have a clear policy before, they'll have one now.

And that's a can or worms they must be VERY unhappy to have seen her open.

The implications are staggering, and would include student rights to avoid her classroom - and the classroom of any professor who has made disparaging references in ANY context, including the freewheeling world of academic writing.

Basically, this lady just took the world's biggest dump on the university that tenured her, and thumbed her nose at everyone.

    Not a good look.

    Sounds about right.

This woman is a nightmare, and honestly, needs to be shown the door.

She did NOT think before she spoke, and Rutgers is now paying the price.

The balance is the issue, yes.

She is now the face of Rutgers.

And her wild & outrageous rant, expressed on Twitter rather than in, for instance, the Rutgers student newspaper, cannot be the face that Rutgers wishes the world to see.

    She is a disgrace.

Interesting to see what will happen, especially as Rutgers has its first black president, and he's brand new.

I think she thought it out completely and she dug her heel in when people complained. Go to her Twitter page or a cite that is posting some of them. She BELIEVES this crap.

Is she the face, or did the media make her the 'face' as part of a larger cultural war on higher education?

She's made terrible miscalculations, and many are paying the price, and will do so in future.

    She's a nightmare.

This is NOT a free speech 1st Amendment issue the school has every right to disagree with her vile opinion and choose not to have her in front of their students for them. She still a private citizen when she is teaching but the classroom belongs to the school and THEY get to decide what will be taught and by whom.
