500lbs of shark on a 13lb line! whoa...

TFM - I thought of you immediately when I saw this story.
Did you and Pops make your annual trip this year?

I think they released this story for "Shark Week". LOL.

Is this story a joke? I've been fishing all my life and never seen of 13 lb test line.

    with monofilament.

Yeah, personally I would like to see proof or video of this to be honest because it sounds like BS. Every year or so you get people doing shady things or lying to get their name in the record books. Even with a steel leader, you're not going to get a 500 lb shark to surface with 13 lb test without snapping the line. It could dive at anytime and there goes your line. From the story, it made it sound like they actually fought the shark with 13 lb test until it tired, something a 40 lb child could break. If it was caught on 13 lb test, they probably got lucky and the shark surfaced on it's own, where they were able to lassow the tail and drag it, suffocating it.

Unfortunately, Pop's Parkinson's has progressed to a point where Mexico is out. We went up trout fishing a few weeks ago, where he can sit on a rock and fish all day, but deep sea fishing is not going to happen.

However, I am heading to Cabo on 9/28 for a week of slaughtering our resources. Going after tuna, and we will chase marlin, sailfish, and dorado if the opportunity strikes.

A tiger on 13 pound test? I am smelling a fish story there.

Just saw this yesterday. One seriously huge and ratty looking striper.

    http://www.courant.com/sports/other/hc-greg-myerson-striped-bass-0814-20110813,0,2416632.story
Greg Myerson knew what he had — a striped bass — and he knew it was big. Just not that big.

It seems as if everyone wants to talk to Myerson these days after he landed an 81.88-pound, 54-inch striped bass earlier this month. Sporting goods stores want reproduction mounts of the big one. Tackle companies are calling. Myerson, a union electrician who has been in and out of work this year, should receive some money from what will be a world record if it's certified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). He said he has submitted the necessary documentation, so that rigorous process has started.

Myerson says he fishes every night, weather permitting. When reached Friday, he had been out the night before and caught a 51-pounder.

"It depends on the tide, but I try to get out there right around sunset," said Myerson, 43, of North Branford. "The bluefish stop feeding by dark. If they're around, you can't get an eel to the bottom."

Getting old is part of life. Sucks, but if I make it to 50 without an auto immune disease, I beat both my parents. 7 years to go. It has been 14 years since he was diagnosed, and he has stayed mobile longer than most. Unfortunately, the last year things have caught up with him. '

In the words of Sally fields, dying is part of life.

However, trust me, you remembering (*)(*)(*)(*) like the fishing trip is why you are one of the few out of thousands online over the years whom I encounter that I respect.

I will send you an invite to the hunting and fishing group.

Hush puppies? This is California. We do ceviche.

One can catch what we call Napa River trout all day long around here, 12 inch stripers. I have not caught a keeper in years, until recently. 18 1/4". Just legal. Fillet it, cut out the brown, soak it in vinegar and lime over night, add some olive oil and cilantro, serve on sliced and toasted sourdough, and it is better than sex.

    Me and the legal striper.
