Were. No men, women and children were killed.

This is it. Our language has become so eroded that people can't even manage to use plural verb forms consistently any more.

This is so dumb. You don't see Fox News reporting the 14 murders in Chicago. Why? It has nothing to do with partisanship. Rather, it is because people getting shot and killed in Chicago isn't even news that anyone is going to watch. But a crazy dumb guy bringing a gun to a pizza store because Trump told him Hillary was raping kids in there? I bet ever you were intrigued by this story when you first heard about it.

You can't blame the media for reporting this. Should they ignore it? No-one is blaming Trump. Instead it seems that the bull(*)(*)(*)(*) flying around in certain internet forums (ahem not the fair dinkum PF of course) and via social media hysteria got this nutter excited enough for him to go an conduct his own investigation. With a gun. There will be more nutbar actions like this as the stupidity continues. As I said, it's not Trump's fault. What is happening is that some unhinged types think it's okay to indulge their lunatic fantasies.

Actually, nothing. Still, some of his far right supporters (conspiratorialists in this case) seem to believe that this is a factual thing. Unfortunately, it's all based on their faith as there is no evidence or "smoking gun" to give this story any credence. The more you want to believe in something, the less proof is required by viewer. Therein lays the difference between Truth and Facts. Truth is what people believe is real. It does not require facts.

The problem is that enough of a percent of the total population seeming to lacked either thinking ability or logic had resulted in Trump somehow managing to become our president.

Our great centuries long experiment in self government seems sadly to becoming to an end.

We started with Washington and are ending with Trump.

Your silly attempts at evasion notwithstanding, when an alt-right crackpot swallows fake news and starts shooting up legitimate American businesses with his man-enhancer, that's a bad thing - regardless of whether you are able to honestly confront it.

Its not just a recount - such as "ok the difference is within the margin so lets recount".

The premise behind why these people want a recount is the conspiracy theory, the result denier conspiracy, the counther conspiracy, if you will.

These people think fraud has occurred; Russian haxsoring.

(Lets not forget that these same people belligerently believe that voter fraud cannot happen, has not happened, will not happen, and that any suggestion of it is "racist".)

They have no proof of any kind nor do they have an suggestion of an avenue down which proof may be discovered.

In fact the original districts cited for their "irregularities" were districts that Trump was expected to fully since before the election season even heated up.

And yes one person has been killed over pizzagate, but thousands have been injured as well as hundreds of millions of dollars spent due to Hillary losing and the subsequent "not my President" riots.

What did I evade? I condemned the shooter and I condemned a non-verified story. What do you want me to do, take the gun away from the gun nut?

Whether you acknowledge that fake news exploiting pea-brained ideologues is dangerous for decent Americans before you go into your requisite diversionary song and dance, why not take guns away from such known crackpots?

It is dangerous for decent Americans. Happy? Now, I'll be happy to propose a gun control idea(I do have one, it's called Switzerland.). I'm not one of those who believe the 2nd Amendment means anyone should have a gun. I for one, don't think I could handle a gun so I won't use one. Mistakes are deadly with that thing.

The problem is that many who should not have guns desire guns, of course. Thus, society's need to identify them.

Switzerland's approach to private arms would likely incur the wrath of the NRA that controls the US Congress. Permits for carrying in public are only restrictively issued and, to purchase a weapon, an acquisition permit must be obtained that specifies that the purchaser is not psychiatrically disqualified, has a clean criminal record, and does not pose a security problem.

An Edgar Maddison Welch might have problems acquiring his shooty bits in Switzerland.

Welch, armed with an AR-15 and a .38, told police that he had “read online that the Comet restaurant was harboring child sex slaves," and that he wanted to see for himself if they were there. He stated that he "was armed to help rescue them."

Whether his potentially lethal alt-right credulity would have been discovered by the Swiss can only be guessed.

Exactly the reason it should be passed. It fits in with the regulatory part of the second amendment, and if you're a sane, law-abiding American there's no reason why you can't fulfill those regulations. Now, as for how to protect the mentally ill, who have now been denied the 2nd Amendment. That's something I've been trying to wrap my head around.

I am of like mind. "Mentally ill" does not automatically denote homicidal or suicidal. "Delusional" - as in being dangerously naïve regarding fake news provocations - is a more applicable disqualifier.

It's a tricky area, and it's one that can't be solved by either side being partisan, but by being forward thinking in solutions. One such idea I had is the concept of armed security for these individuals or homes, etc. Similar to the Secret Service. After all, if SS could protect politicians then they should be able to protect the average citizen. Hell, it'd take care of two birds in one swoop: To get guns off the streets, and to provide the natural defense that is touted as a reason for the second amendment.

The stigma of seeking mental healthcare impedes many more endeavours than amassing personal arsenals, I'm afraid.

Unfortunately, their are far too many hidebound, paranoidal ideologues eager to run amok when stimulated by fake news that comports with their irrational notions.

    "Now I'm a believer!
Not a trace, of doubt in my mind,
    'Cause I'm a believer,
    Yes I'm a believer!"

And before the hardcore Trumpaloons revert to their customary embarrassingly puerile ploy of "I know you are, but what am I?", yes, everyone should have enough self-respect to ascertain and respect truth. There are far too many willing dupes eager to be manipulated by liars.

Infowars' Alex Jones apologizes for pushing 'Pizzagate' conspiracy theory
    BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 03/25/17 10:17 AM EDT 322
    4,291

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Friday apologized to the owner of a Washington pizzeria that became the subject of a conspiracy theory about human trafficking last year.

Pizza shop Comet Ping Pong was thrust into the spotlight last year after a gunman allegedly fired a shot inside the restaurant. The suspect said he was investigating the unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton and her campaign chairman, John Podesta, were operating a child sex trafficking ring out of the restaurant.

The theory, which became known as Pizzagate, had circulated among far-right conspiracy theory websites and social media accounts.

“In our commentary about what had become known as Pizzagate, I made comments about Mr. Alefantis that in hindsight I regret, and for which I apologize to him,” Jones, who runs Infowars, said in a video. James Alefantis is the owner of Comet Ping Pong.
Jones said his website relied on reporters who are no longer employed by Infowars and that video reports about Pizzagate were removed from the website. He also invited Alefantis onto the show to discuss the incident.

“To my knowledge today, neither Mr. Alefantis, nor his restaurant Comet Ping Pong, were involved in any human trafficking as was part of the theories about Pizzagate that were being written about in many media outlets and which we commented upon,” Jones said.

Jones is known to engage in conspiracy theories. The radio host in his broadcasts has falsely claimed that the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax and that the U.S. government was involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Last week, a plea deal was reached for the man accused of firing a weapon inside the shop.

‘Pizzagate’ Conspiracy Theorist Who Shot Up D.C. Restaurant Sentenced To 4 Years
Edgar Maddison Welch had bought into a fake story suggesting child sex trafficking took place there.
    By Ryan J. Reilly
WASHINGTON ― A North Carolina man who took a gun to a family-oriented pizza restaurant in northwest D.C. so he could look into a conspiracy theory that the eatery was home to a child sex trafficking ring was sentenced on Thursday to four years in federal prison.

Federal prosecutors sought 4.5 years for Edgar Maddison Welch, who pleaded guilty in March in connection with the December 2016 attack. They argued a stiff sentence would “deter other would-be vigilantes” who might be motivated by “the next internet-inspired conspiracy theory.” They said Welch “traumatized the employees and customers” of Comet Ping Pong, and that “his crimes affected an entire community, leaving many people feeling threatened.”

The time he has already spent behind bars, including nearly two months in solitary confinement, will count toward his sentence.

U.S. District Judge Ketanji Jackson told Welch on Thursday that she was worried “other people will see what you have done and be inspired by it.” She said Welch’s case “is no ordinary assault case” and that a sentence at the upper end of the sentencing guidelines was necessary.

The extent of the recklessness in this case is breathtaking.
    U.S. District Judge Ketanji Jackson
“I have never heard anything like the conduct that brings us here today,” she said. “The extent of the recklessness in this case is breathtaking.”

Jackson said she believed Welch to be a nice person who thought he was doing the right thing, but that his actions were not an “off-the-cuff” decision. He should have gone to law enforcement if he thought children were in danger, she said.

The probation office recommended a sentence of 18 months. But federal prosecutors Demian Ahn and Sonali Patel made the case that a lengthier sentence was justified.

    COURT FILING
Speaking to the courtroom packed with family members, victims, reporters and observers, an orange-clad Welch ― his hair shaved down ― briefly said he was sorry.

“I am really sorry for anything I caused,” he said.

Welch previously wrote a letter apologizing for his actions, saying he was “truly sorry for endangering the safety of any and all bystanders who were present that day. Unfortunately, I cannot change what I did, but I think I owe it to the families and the community to apologize for my mistakes.”

Dani Jahn, an attorney representing Welch, said it was “very hard to tell what the future is going to hold for Mr. Welch.”

He is from a small town where people are “not as sophisticated” about politics and news as residents of D.C., Jahn said. She asked that he not be judged for an isolated event.

Patel argued that Welch had “forever changed” the lives of the victims, several of whom spoke in court and submitted letters to the judge.

“I’m almost sorry you were duped,” one unnamed 32-year-old Comet Ping Pong employee told Welch. He noted that many so-called “Pizzagate” conspiracy theorists now believed Welch was a hired actor. “That’s how the game is played,” he said, adding that the online Pizzagate conspiracy theorists “almost got blood on [their] hands.”

Another employee told the court he wanted to “sink into the ground” after the shooting and needed traumatic counseling.

“I feel more empathy for you than anger,” he said, and told Welch he’d been a “pawn” of people who were happy to take advantage of him. “I still wish you the best of luck in your life going forward.”

James Alefantis, the owner of Comet Ping Pong, told reporters after the sentencing that it still wasn’t clear from Welch’s written and verbal apologies whether he believed the conspiracy theory.

“This gunman will spend years in jail, and I will try to rebuild my life and my name and my business,” he said. “I think that there are many other people who have pushed this conspiracy theory, who have created enormous amounts of harm to all of our community who have so far not been held accountable, and have not apologized for the damage and the harm that they’ve done.”

Before Welch was sentenced, Alefantis told the court he hopes that “reason will prevail before a shot rings out again.”
