Okay, please explain, in detail, exactly what the Martyrs Fund is, and tell us exactly what it does, and tell us why it does does what it does.

I live in Israel. The Israeli government doesn't have the authority to make laws, only to adopt proposals to be submitted to the Knesset. The author of the article in the NYT is either ignorant or lying. Unfortunately, even well intentioned people are likely to believe this kind of misinformation if they don't know anything about the real Israel.

The illegal settlements haven't been retro-actively legalized. Some politicians proposed a law that would have permitted such a move, but that was just democracy in action. You know, even people you disagree with have the right to free speech in a democracy, something the NYT seems to have completely overlooked.

If you bother to read the whole article, by the way, you might understand that, in the case of Ulpana at least, the land was purchased, so from the settlers' and the state point of view the settlement was perfectly legal. The later claim that the Palestinian seller didn't have the right to sell the land didn't magically transform the past. The decision to build the settlement was legal at the time, to the best knowledge of everybody involved, so the matter is a bit more complicated than the first lines of the article suggest. But who reads all the article, especially if the first lines satisfy the reader's confirmation bias?
