The parents were wrong to do what they did. I think it's fine if they were pushing their daughter to have an abortion, but I believe they crossed the line with the leveraging of her resources they were doing. The courts ruled correctly in this case, in my opinion, which pains me to say because I hate giving pro-lifers any type of victory. It tends to go to their heads. But, it's ultimately the woman's choice and the daughter obviously wants to keep it.

    BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

I'm pro-choice, which makes me an abortion loving baby hating maniac, right? How could I possibly agree with the outcome of this case?! Is it BONKERS!? Am I OFF MY ROCKER!?!

Nope. Because the abortion loving stuff is some of the most idiotic bullcrap I've ever encountered. Pro-choice is pro-CHOICE. Our outcome is about what the mother chooses. This mother chose to give birth.

I agree, women should have a choice.

The parents were wrong to try to force her to have an abortion she didn't want.

I hope she doesn't expect them to baby sit while she finishes school and does her shifts at McDonald's....for the rest of her life....

Forced and coerced abortions happen far more frequently than many realize. Even more often mothers are blackmailed into getting an abortion.
The ironic thing is that so often abortion is not really about "choice" at all. It just makes young women more vulnerable to exploitation.

You only care about what the woman wants. Your position is very inconsistent. If the woman wants an abortion, you say the fetus is a meaningless piece of tissue. Yet if she wants her baby, you think forced abortion is absolutely horrible. You justify this by saying it is all just about giving the woman choice, but you know as well as I do how horrible it is because the fetus does have value, even if you think this value is only whatever the mother gives it. Or perhaps what you pro-choicers cannot admit is that you know it's a baby, but you still think the woman should have the choice to terminate it.

Why am I not surprised; a pro-choicer judging a woman for not getting an abortion!

I never judged her....can't you read?????

I stated my opinion of what her life may be like from now on.

IF she had had an abortion what would YOU think of her???? YOU would definitely JUDGE her as you have all women who have had abortions....

Nothing to be done about that. Life is full of choices and some of them are tough and important where you'll have other people pressuring you to choose one way or another. What's important in situations like this is that the law is not forcing a choice upon someone, or penalizing them for making what some people consider to be the wrong choice. I can't have a realistic belief that I can prevent coercion from other people, but I can have a belief that the law can offer some protection to that person when she is making a choice between legal options.

It's not inconsistent at all, because I'm not entering into this with a specific outcome in mind. People have value, certainly, but a fetus is not a person. That by itself doesn't mean it doesn't have value, but that value is much more subjective. It's not my place, or anyone elses for that matter, to arbitrarily decide what that value is for another person or how they should take it into consideration. I know you don't see the difference between a fetus and a born baby, but I do, and I won't pretend it doesn't exist. But, my opinion on it's value is just that, my opinion. Why should my opinions about extremely personal matters like this have to be taken into consideration by a person I don't even know and whom I will not be providing any aid of any kind to? Why should a woman have to take your opinion about what's inside of her into consideration? That logic always strikes me as incredibly arrogant.

I know it will become a baby and I still think the woman should have the choice to terminate it. I understand perfectly what happens during an abortion, what the outcome of it is, and what the outcome of not having one is. I am not pro-choice out of ignorance and I doubt anyone else really is either.

Should we get rid of the minimum wage too? No one is forcing workers to work for less. If they are willing to work for less, that is their decision.
Of course, it does open them up to exploitation. But again, they are only being exploited by their own decisions. Same with women being pressured to get an abortion,

Obviously all these women would not be pressured and coerced to get abortions in the first place if abortion facillities did not exist.
(or at least if it was not possible to obtain an elective abortion)

And that situation has nothing to do with someone's personal rights over their own body and what happens inside it. The minimum wage helps provide a nominal level of stability, because without it, you're right, workers would get exploited. Having a job or a means of income is hardly an optional thing in today's world. Some people can get government benefits, but I have a feeling those are going to be disappearing before long. We don't live in an agricultural society anymore, people don't have access to lots of land to grow food on and support themselves with. Most people live in urban areas and you're not growing any corn or beans on a blacktop city street. One of the reasons that abortion becomes an option in the first place is due to income and supporting oneself. Without a minimum wage, you would see MORE abortions.

Again, it's futile to have an expectation of control over anyone's personal interactions. The law simply can't be used to regulate every single type of pressure someone is going to feel. Can you imagine what that would be like, because it wouldn't just be for abortion? But, the law can say that the right to make the decision legally belongs to the mother but she has to be one to decide what the choice is going to be. It hasn't already been made for her. It can also say she has a right to make that decision with a reasonable degree of legal protection from force or harm. That does leave it up to the mother to use those protections if or when she needs them, but that's not something you can use the law to fix in the first place. It's just like with any crime, if it doesn't get reported and investigated, there's usually not much that can be done about it.

So abortion was invented in 1973?

Sure it's an option! You can just shrivel up and die. Just like the baby who gets aborted because his mother was exploited.

No, but the number of abortions EXPLODED after that point.

I know that you know there isn't the slightest bit of similarity between those two situations.

This isn't a victory for anyone but herself, she has her right to choose what happens to her own body and nobody, not even her parents get a say in that.

I am glad that the courts ruled in her favor.

Not so, the number of abortions was approximately the same. Please note the date on this Time article.

    Medicine: Pills & Paste

"Have you got anything to help my girl out? She's in trouble."

This not uncommon appeal across a drugstore counter spawns one of the world's meanest, lowest rackets. As every druggist knows, the customer who makes this plea is interested in abortion and usually wants a box of pills (often hideously expensive). As every gynecologist knows, pills don't work—and are highly dangerous. Last week the U.S. Food & Drug Administration let it be known that it had launched a determined drive against the thriving abortion-drug trade.

Doctors estimate that one U.S. pregnancy out of every three ends in abortion. Some abortions are spontaneous...
