Of course we should, it was an abomination followed by massive racism that lasts up until today. America will forever be tainted by slavery and racism, we cannot escape it. Think long and hard about why so many of us look down upon the poor. When I hear someone say "we give too many free things away" I hear racism. That is at the very heart of this entire meme. Free stuff for blacks and now Mexicans. No one ever talks about free stuff for granny or uncle joe or your buddy on disability, nope, its always "those guys" that are taking "free" stuff. We will never shake our racism, never. Sure we can improve upon it and we have but deep down, we are racist to the core. Ever hear anyone say the following? "That white POTUS was horrible, that is the last time we ever elect another white person again." Yet we all hear the same trope about blacks and Obama from the racists and even from the moderates who think they are not racist. Why? Because we know deep down that being black is a huge barrier and that blacks get a shot at it and when they blow it, the whole race is blamed. Same with women btw. I have been around too long to believe that what I say is not true. It is part of our psyche, it is our history, our story, our whiteness together. Yes, we should apologize.

My ancestors were not in the United States until the 1930's. They were in Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia under the yoke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, consigned to be forced to work for them and for lack of a better word, enslaved and conscripted into war under National Socialism prior to coming to America for a better life. Unfortunately, I cannot vote in the poll since I have no connection to slavery either directly or indirectly. Opinion: The days of apologies are over. No one alive was enslaved and I don't understand what the goal of such an apology would be.

Yes, sub Saharan African history includes a number of rather sophisticated empires/kingdoms with extensive trading ties and great riches.

The poster I was exposing as making a wholly ignorant comment, claimed black Africans couldn't even build brick houses. That is simply nonsense based on ignorance, whether bigoted or not.
