Intent and context. My take on this is largely unchanged, though. The n-word and the 3-letter or 6-letter f-word have a much stronger history as slurs; the context in which they are being used as slurs is extremely limited and unlikely to be encountered here. One cannot say the same for words like 'racist' or 'homophobic'. So I think when it comes to the latter two words, one would have to make a case to the moderators, who should have discretion to decide whether or not the usage amounts to name-calling.

Caring about feelings can often ruin the fun. Where have all the fun posters gone?

Non sequitur. What -exactly- about the two slurs you mention being older makes it more legitimate to restrict their use than other "newer" slurs, and even arguendo if it were, how does if follow from any possible answer that the slurs "racist," "misogynist" and "homophobe" are not also bad and should not also be strictly restricted by the forum rules in the same way without some case-by-case appeal to specific moderators?

+1 on context. A black guy calling his homie the N word isn't a racial slur, even though he used it. But are blacks the only ones with racial or ethnic sensitivities? Why can people use the slurs for irish, italians, germans, asians, mexicans, aborigines, or any other ethnic group, but if a black person's slur is used, it is worse than any? Isn't that a double (or more) standard? Is it some kind of PC compensation for slavery? I don't get the hysteria over black slurs, but none over anyone else. ..and yes, the gay community is lobbying to have their slurs just as bad (or worse!) than blacks.

Good. Why should they be any different than any other group or idea, all of which get bashed as well?

I've already explained the difference - can't make you get what you don't wish to get.

Argh. That should have read, "the context in which they are NOT being used as slurs is extremely limited ".

    Really hate when that happens.

I actually would agree that it's not worse than other slurs. Demeaning is demeaning, regardless of the group targeted.

    Yes.

    Quite possibly.

    Slurs shouldn't be used, period.

No, you can't make me get what you didn't clearly express... or answer.

Would fall into the same category as 'racist' or 'homophobic'.
