Zero tolerance is slowly dying off in many schools. It's unsupportable. I know in my wife's school system, they haven't done zero tolerance policies in at least 7 or 8 years.

That said, reading the link and looking at the links in the article, the first case, the Jones County Mississippi boy, was justified by the school (the other cases were out to lunch). The toy gun he had looked way too real, and a 12 year old should know better. (also, a 12 year old 5th grader means that he's at least a year behind).

Every time I see articles on zero tolerance in schools two separate thoughts run through my head.
The first, is a school mindlessly follows a line of thinking are protecting (really indoctrinating) children but willing to sacrifice one to the trauma of the wrath of the school on a child for a harmless activity, inflicting a punishment vastly out of proportion to the threat. Yet, each time a child is shot by some whacko, they cry for gun control legislation using children as the emotional rationalization... it's a bit hypocritical to me in the extreme. How can such a thing be justified? Crucify a child to satisfy other parents their children are being protected? Really? Or, is it simply part of the indoctrination process, you know, a Khmer education theory of some sort?

The second thought, thinking back to the comparable years I was in attending school and chuckling on the extreme of things. I never carried my gun in school, but hid it on my route to school, but I almost always had one of two switchblades on me; one with a 7" blade, 15" OA and the other with a 6" blade, 13" OA (still have them... they are on the desk in front of me). I have had one or more confiscated but usually returned at end of school day after getting marked for punishment whacks (I got a lot of those) collected every Tuesday. I wasn't alone in that.

I wonder if that is why I am a pro-gun rights advocate.LOL.... geez.... at some point someone might advocate for me to be sent to Re-education.
