With the same in mind, couldn't the reverse also be said? Seems "Muslim" is the story. if there are no policy positions taken into account, why should it be exciting to know shes a Muslim?

No it isn't. it's meaningless actually....like counting skin colors or genders.

    It's not a qualification.

No one said it was a qualification only that it was exciting and historic. Pretending like you don't know the difference is amusing I suppose but transparent. If I said it was exciting that Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon you wouldn't shout back at me who cares if he's a man. It totally misses the point.

    Of course not.

That's an actual achievement. Why would you consider a religious choice to be on par with that?

And why is the "first Muslim" to be exciting? Religion shouldn't come into play at all for the position right? So why is it exciting?

be careful of chasing these Firsts. They give you Obamas.

And the country was better off for it. (Obama I mean).

That said, it is something to celebrate when the leadership of the Country more accurately reflects the people within that country. Having the same kind of people with the same perspective ends up with tunnel vision. Different perspectives on what the people of the country want should be celebrated, not dismissed with a hand-wave.

who cares what her religion is, as long as she honors the US Constitution? If anything, Americans are showing the world what it means to be unified not divided.

Right. I'll await the celebration of the "first" Spaghetti Monster follower with great anticipation. if we get enough of them, maybe we can start pushing for more Spaghetti influence on our population.

    Exciting times.

    Exactly.

This is only an exciting notation for the shallow members of society, the Identity politics of the left.

*shrug* I'm more of a 'Dude-ist' myself. If Spaghetti followers start numbering in the millions (or to compare to the topic at hand, over a billion) then yeah, some representation would be a good thing.

Kind of a silly comparison though, even by strictly population numbers.

Except that religion isn't supposed to be pushed through government...so why would anyone ask, care for be excited about said representation?

This is the problem today. Everyone is focused on representation.

Well people do and have felt under-represented.

I agree that Religion and Govt shouldn't mix, but when you have Congresspeople making their Christianity a cornerstone of their campaigns/terms, I think that point has become a bit moot at this stage.

I have to laugh at leftists wanting Muslims in power.

Guess who their first targets will be under Sharia.

You know what, it's my fault. I expect to much of you. I can't expect right wingers to understand the breaking down of social fears and barriers that have to occur to elect someone from a marginalized segment of the population to higher office and why that should be exciting. Because honestly, it would be exciting if the right wing would just elect people who didn't drop their pants while screaming racial slurs for the cameras.

LoL another one who thinks right wingers are more bigoted than their Sharia-loving demographic.

LOL...so no real answer other than it feels good coupled with a race card.

Typical. I didn't expect any real substantive answer anyway.

How many religions are there , are we going to celebrate the first Wickan? First Atheist? First <insert religion here>?

Of course not. It's not really about representation to all, just the Lefts pet groups. When it's Muslim we need to mention it.

Maybe she can start getting some Sharia Law voted on, and passed. That would be really exciting.

"First" Sharia law in the US. I can't wait!!

Sure, why shouldn't we celebrate the first wiccan or atheist? And we're not celebrating her being a Muslim, we're celebrating the fact that her being a muslim didn't make her unelectable.

And you always will have them.

one could find and make more "identities" to represent, then there are positions to be filled.
Representation of everyone simply isn't possible, so I fail to see the excitement of the entirely predictable ones we choose to celebrate.
