Can you believe this guy......you are incredible dude! Total disparity between the two comments in terms of meaning, which means you've contradicted yourself. Bit strange to be honest!
Agreed - the storyline of the "responsible" woman in the family hit home. However I have seen this in soooooo many Indigenous families here that there is one overriding person who takes on almost all responsibility not just to "family" but to clan, community and even sometimes race. Sadly they often end up neglecting themselves and I think THAT was a message in that story line too. Loved the ending!!
We do - and they are wonderful, powerful women, sometimes not the easiest to get along with, but they are the glue in the family. It is a sad and sorry family that does not have one of these "aunties". Strangely it seems that age does not really matter - most are grannies, (one was even a great great grandmother!!!) but occasionally you meet a teen who, through circumstances and personality and peer pressure has been put on the "responsible aunty" road. It is these women we should be targeting with assistance, education and sometimes just plain encouragement and support.
You see less of the "uncles" but those that do are stand outs. I mean that they are self controlled self supporting and they have self esteem. They usually become elders
It was a bit melodramatic and predictable for me. I thought I was going to vomit when the kids mother said something like "The only difference between you and me, is you have a husband that supports you", and then, "You might not think I'm a good parent, but they (her kids) do", spare me! To be fair, she was mentally unbalanced, but still. And the MC let's the son have a frickin playstation in his room, but complains and complains that he plays it all the time. Oh, my, God. And it was seriously pathetic the way the husband apparently couldn't cope for one day without her and went grovelling back to her. High quality production though, future episodes might be better.
I don't know about melodramatic, a lot of peoples lives are melodramatic otherwise we wouldn't want to watch them. If you have no idea the difference a "good man" can make in a womans life, just the same as a "good woman" can make for a man. But it can be devastating for a woman who has been lied to and used by a man, then he just ups and leaves her with the children. Then yes she had a mental condition, probably due to issues in her earlier life. We could just say "handle it girl", but then some cannot handle it, so what do we do, push them aside, or are we civilised. Even with her condition, and the state in which she lived, her children loved her, though I see a lot of the more well to do lot, where their children despise their parents. I don't think the husband was grovelling, he just didn't understand, he thought she was trying to prove a point, which she was, just not the one he thought. She did show that she loved him despite this. It was not the best of the series, but then something is always better.
Is it filmed in Redfern? I heard a few years ago that the demographic was changing there as the value of the dirt increased due to it's relatively impressive location. Maybe within 50 years the only aboriginals left will be those with quite a few quid.
Yes it is shot in redfern, the large grassy area in front of the building with the Aboriginal flag on it is where the infamous "block" once stood. The area around the old "block" is now upmarket, mostly "arty" types or accademics as there are 3 of Australia's top universities in close proximity. The house next door has been used in the filming so it's been pretty hectic here sometimes. From my balcony I can see the "block" and the tangled wreck of that crane which fell yesterday
Another brilliant movie, in the tradition of #the last worrier, NZ#. However, in our legalized tradition of accepted violence, another movie to show the world where we stand and where we remain....
Adultmale has a point regarding tv in Australia. Much of it IS crap. But it seems that crap attracts the demographics that advertisers love and that's what commercial tv is about, making money from advertising. I confess to liking a bit of crap tv - films with lots of shooting and explosions and anything SF - "reality" tv no thank you. But as DV pointed out, "Redfern Now" has rated its head off. So Australians will watch quality tv. Thankfully we have ABC and SBS to balance out the rubbish. I'm not a tv snob, I'm not an intellectual, I just don't like to waste my viewing time with crap. And this series has the capability to banish a lot of myths about urbanised indigenous Australians. I have to hope though that the usually polarised opinion leaders shut their traps on this one and allow the series to speak for itself.
"Aunty" has always had a big influence on Australian people - often in surprising ways. It was interesting to see how many people suddenly knew about Buddhist myths when they showed "Monkey" for example - and even more surprising how many people watched and enjoyed that show!! But Redfern Now has marked new ground - the stories are coming across as powerful stories regardless of who they are about - and that might be the greatest strength. Give points of relation so people can say - these people are not "them" but "us" and then we might finally also get rid of the "these people" and just have "us mob". "Heartland" was a great series but, being based in rural Australia I do not think it had the impact on the general populace that this series will have. In my lifetime I have watched the USA evolve from the KKK to a black president in the White House - this was mostly done through media showing that colour IS only skin deep. By letting familiarity breed not contempt but comfortable. Things have changed, not enough of things admittedly but they HAVE changed. Oh! And BTW - everyone does know that SBS's unofficial name is "Sex Before Soccer"??
Have had lots of enjoyment with NITV. Absolutely love the regional footy, both AFL and NRL, and various segments on local issues, bush medecine among others. Will be good to tune in again.
Pretty much have to agree here, mate. As I said above, I have had a lot of enjoyment from NITV. It's different, it's funny and I think this old dog has learned some new things from watching. If you haven't watched it, I suggest that you give it a look-in. Lots of goodies, but I think Marn Grook would have to be my favourire.
Yes melodramatic. You might like melodrama, but I don't. That was the most cringe worthy line I've heard in a drama on the ABC for a long time. Loving someone has nothing to do with them being a "good mother". And please don't give me that cliche about rich people not loving each other as much as poor people, eurgh! He was grovelling. It was by far the worst of the series, absolutely dripping wet, worse than larkrise to candleford. The others were much, much better.
Starts off with good intentions, but ends up being a “black” Home & Away. Some people would watch any shyte.
