You argued that "a good portion" of the founding fathers were deists. However, only one member of the Constitutional convention actually considered himself a deist. Other founding fathers such as Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and supposedly George Washington (although I am not sure about him) were Diests. They were a very small majority. I would not describe a good portion of the founding fathers as deists. Instead, I would describe a good portion of them as protestants or catholics of various degrees of adherence.
