I guess rules mean squat when you have to pander to and coddle the highly paid players who don't understand or really care what the flag and the anthem mean. This is what the slippery slope of of progressive "anything goes" dogma does to society. Here is what the NFL Operations manual states:

The rules are found on pages A62-63 of the league’s game operations manual:

The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.

During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.

UPDATE: The NFL, responding to the Kansas City Star, confirmed the national anthem-related rules cited above. However, the NFL's vice president of communications, Brian McCarthy, "stressed that [the] passage about the national anthem is a guideline and not a requirement."

But this is odd since the rule warns that failure to comply "may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses." Why does the NFL attach penalties for failure to comply if this is all just a "guideline," as the league now argues?

It appears the NFL is simply changing the rules — by electing not to enforce them.

Are Goodell and his NFL hypocrites? Or just two faced liars?

There is no mention of the national anthem in the NFL rulebook. There are no pages A62 or A63, either.

Goodell probably didn't even know that was in there. I highly doubt he has ever cared enough to crack an NFL rule book. Hell, most of the time they don't even kick you off when you commit crimes.

Well where is your claim !!!!

    http://www.snopes.com/must-nfl-players-stand/
The NFL's rulebook contains a regulation specifically requiring players to stand on the sideline during the pre-game playing of the U.S. national anthem.

    RATING
    [IMG] MIXTURE
    WHAT'S TRUE

The NFL's rulebook says nothing about player conduct during the pre-game playing of the U.S. national anthem.

    WHAT'S FALSE

The NFL's game operations manual may contain a regulation stating that players must be present on the sidelines during the national anthem, but not that they must stand.

Don't bother me with your loser Snopes crap! Their word twisting is slick but it cannot
    conceal the facts.
The proper question is: Does the NFL have policy that governs sideline demonstrations and behavior during pre game flag presentations and the national anthem?

And the answer is Yes, it does, and it can be found in the NFL Game Operations Manual.

Sorry to busy your little hopeful bubble.

This is exactly what the NFL operations manual says:

    According to Time Sports magazine.

    • The manual dictates exact times for teams leaving the locker rooms, player introductions, the national anthem (two minutes maximum) and the coin toss.

I can't find a link to the ops manual but there's an expandable note at the link that opens a summary.

    All from your original link.

I just downloaded this and used "Control + F" to find Anthem and it's nowhere to be found. Point remains, however, that kneeling or sitting during the National Anthem is a blatant disrespect for the flag and has nothing to do with what these players are protesting outside of anything but their unwarranted hatred for the president.

It specifically says "STAND AT ATTENTION."

But, since the protests at least originally were against the police - and the team owners now are urging everyone of their staff break their own rules, it now more is a protest on behalf of lawlessness itself.

At this point, it would seem at the discretion of all NFL players to decide what rules they will and will not follow and there is actually no legal written guidelines or standards.
