It seems likely to me that the Russians can win. In which case, these "terms" will be imposed anyway.

That's about 17% of the country.

Basically "give us everything we want or we will keep blowing you up".

That's not negotiating, its delivering an ultimatum.

The only appropriate response is bombing the Kremlin. Russia must be smashed to atoms.

they seem pretty unprepared for the amount of resistance they're getting both from the ukrainians and from their own populace, and any military victory they were to have would be overshadowed by the greater economic & political losses incurred from this invasion. what makes you so confident they can win?

No, they just redraw them with puppet leaders. Maybe they should call them unincorporated territories like Puerto Rico so that they can be like second class citizens?

What Russia proposes is not that rediculous. There is a room for compromise, maneuver when more demands come than it can be fullfield. Crimea de facto is in Russia. So nothing will change if they do not recognize it. Neutral status? This is more critical issue for Russia. Here by no entering any blocks means of course military blocks. Ukraine in EU-should not be a problem for Russia. It is rather problem for Germany and Netherlands -they do not want Ukraine in EU. Since Germany is a driving economic force in EU, that means overall that whole EU unfortunately does not want to see Ukraine as a member state. At least within the next 10 years. To have friendly, or at least neutral countries on the borders -it is a natural desire for any state. Switzerland introduced the principles of neutrality in their constitution. I do not see any reason why Ukraine can not do it, more, this will result in the cease of the fire. Donetsk and Lugansk-they probably may return to discussions of having these areas as a federal lands within Ukraine, as it was suggested in 2014. Anyway, if Ukraine will not negotiate these terms now, there will be more destructions in Ukraine and there is a high probability that the current government of Ukraine will be removed, provided of course if the West is not involved more than it is involved now.

why is it obvious to you? Do you know how the conflict was planned from the beginning?
These conditions were announced many years before the start of the military operation. Unless before, Russia did not demand to accept the independence of Donbass, but simply demanded that it be left as part of Ukraine as a federal land.
I remind you that this "peaceful country" waged a civil war for 8 years trying to clear the territory of people.
It's time to take responsibility for your actions.

this is exactly what Putin has been suggesting and insisting for 7 years, demanding that Ukraine implement the Minsk agreements. Ukraine for 7 years has done nothing to calm the rebels and return the territory ... nothing but regular shelling and killings.

All I will say for now is that Putin can't be trusted.

Putin had to ask UN intervention: UN interposition forces would have helped in such a situation.
But evidently our former good friend, now good "hostile" Russian, Vladimir Vladimirovich preferred to solve the matter in the old Russian way: sending the tanks ...

Ukraine can make its own choices. This Ukrainian government has asked to join EU.
Obviously EU has answered that there is a procedure to follow.

The point is that Russia cannot impose a change in the constitution of a sovereign country: Ukrainian people will decide.
If Ukraine wants to be neutral it will be welcome. But it's not a decision to take at Moscow or at Rome ...

Eh, in Italy there is a joke ...

If you suspect that Russians don't like you ... when you drink a glass of water it's better to switch the lights off.
In the dark you will be able to find out if the water is fluorescent ... and if it's fluorescent it's better not to drink it!

the OSCE mission has been working in Donbas all these years. France and Germany were the guarantor that Ukraine would fulfill its agreements. And what is the result? None. Why are UN troops needed at all, if there are Minsk agreements, which outline the steps for a settlement. Ukraine just had to fulfill its obligations.
Why didn't Ukraine itself raise the issue of UN peacekeepers? Because Russia is a member of the UN and its peacekeepers would also be present in the Donbass. Ukraine could not allow this, even though they claimed that they had been fighting the Russian army in the Donbas for 8 years.

How much can it pull? When it finally became clear that there would be no progress, when the West strongly ignores the Russian genocide in the Donbass, they had to take the situation into their own hands.

As for I know OSCE observers have been there for years. On March 7th they have completed the "temporary" evacuations.
Probably we should read their reports ... https://www.osce.org/ukraine-smm/reports

I will take a look at that archive.
In particular I'm interested in ceasefire violations [https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/512872 ; https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/512842 and many others ...].

BTW, a UN interposition force [a real and functional one] would be composed by units not coming from the countries involved in the territorial dispute.
And obviously not by units coming from "hostile" countries [so we can exclude San Marino soldiers!].

Today China or India could send Blue Helmets to those regions of Ukraine.
Why not? Beijing has said to be ready to mediate ... https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20220307_39/

Russia was not a party to the conflict in the Donbass. All 8 years, Putin officially considered the Donbass to be the territory of Ukraine.

I think you are wrong. Russia was a party of the conflict as it provided military equipment to Donbass. I would not beleive that Donetsk or Lugansk republics survive 8 years without the military assistance from Russia.

the arms trade does not make a country a party to a conflict. Otherwise, it must be admitted that the United States and NATO countries are participants in the conflict in Ukraine. Besides, the war was positional. Losses of equipment are low, and they themselves knew how to make cartridges.

This makes things even more simple: UN has to ask only to Ukraine before of sending a peace keeping force [it would be no more an interposition force].
And this means that also EU blue helmets could come ...

That's it. The conflict in Ukraine was beneficial to the United States and its vassals. For 8 years, nothing has been done to stop it, except for pumping Ukraine with weapons. This is an excellent reason for economic pressure on Russia. Everyone was indifferent to the fate of people. No one resented the killing of people and the shelling of cities. They did not pay attention to neo-Nazism in Europe.
So far, Russia has not run out of patience to look at the indifference of the world community.

Well, looks like US and other NATO countries are now participants in the conflict in Ukraine.
