Should George Washington and Thomas Jefferson be removed from Mount Rushmore

I mean HECK! they're tearing down every racist statue in the Country, so why shouldn't these two former Slave owners be removed instead of honoring them forever in stone. They both obviously supported slavery and while were at it, lets tear down that Damn! Washington Monument, because it's a
phallic symbol and offends the Womens movement.

 

Weeeell, given the somewhat...colourful origins of the Mt. Rushmore monument, I wouldn't object for a single second to it being torn down.

Neither would probably the aboriginal americans whose holy lands were desecrated by one of the most horribly racist pricks in american history.

 

Just recarve them to all look like Obama and problem solved...

 

Would it not serve society better to leave them and add informational stations around for people to read about who they were, and why they owned slaves, and what their views on slavery were, and all that?

To me, the end goal of these movements are pretty transparent. Undermine the works of the founders. The major work, of course, being the Constitution; the very foundation of our country.

 

Minorities and liberal loons have been spoiled. Many conservatives are now intimidated and afraid to speak up. The loony demands will keep coming. The only leader speaking up against their stupid demands is Trump.

 

Washington and Jefferson were founding fathers of our country. Robert E. Lee was a traitor who went to war against our country. If you can't see the difference you share the same problem that trump has.

 

1. They didn't raise up arms against their country.
2. They didn't lead a war to defend black slavery
3. The are not ideological symbols of white supremacy.

 

So, the thing about liberals is they seem to have a deep seated affinity towards symbols. Its like, for them, the only way to express their pejorative BS, they have to tie it to some BS flag, or slogan, or tangible icon because they simply believe that those symbols reinforce their authority. So, symbols, or art, or anything literally that doesn't support that myopic view must be destroyed. We've seen this play out as ISIS et al destroy the historical monuments of the world. We saw it when the Shia destroyed them in Iraq.

It's petty. It's small. You know, I don't feel much, if anything, when I see a monument. I ask what the purpose of the monument was. I live in a city that was destroyed by both the Confederates and the North. There are monuments to each. There are monuments to the confederate leaders, and there are monuments to the survivors of slavery. And neither kind effect the rational opinion that I maintain about the immense squalor that was the civil war. Their legacy is the pain, and the shame of our nation. We witness that in my city every day. We drive past the battlefields. And we remember. And the important part is that we remember that we shouldn't ever allow ourselves to be so polarized as to put our nation at risk again over the hubris of our petty political issues.

The beauty of this nation is that we built a world where we must be tolerant. Quakers had to live in peace with Anglicans, and Catholics. Jews had to live in peace with Lutherans and Baptists. "Heresy" couldn't become the torrent of vile hatred that it had been on the European continent that most escaped from.

It's on that foundation that our nation is built. We must be tolerant. We must respect the rights and the potential differences we may find between ourselves.

So, the danger here is that those on the left who have become so intolerant and so violent will attempt to strip from us the very nature of our nation. Their world is the world of paternalistic government, intrusive, monolithic, and amoral. And while they may advance the superficial, we must ever be mindful of the underlying intent. The stripping of our freedoms because only the state can enforce it's will and subjugate the people. (Well, except for the elite who are the government)...

Our monuments aren't the symbols the left want. They want us to see "uplifting" "inspiring" monuments of devotion to the state. Their state. Competition isn't, seemingly, allowed. So, we get National socialists. We get Bolsheviks. We get Antifa, and BLMs. And everywhere we look, reasonable America is being destroyed by those on the left who would destroy us to form their more perfect "merika". Thought control. Censorship. Intolerance. That is the left today.

 

If Washington and Jefferson were alive today, they would probably dynamite them off themselves out of embarrassment of what we have become.

 

Washington and Jefferson owned slaves. We don't know which side they would have fought on during the Civil war. Keep it in mind they were slave owners. As to Robert E. Lee your attitude is exactly what Lincoln was against. Remember after the war the Rebels were allowed to keep their weapons and animals and return home. The Confederate states rejoined the Union. All was forgiven. Lee went on to be a good productive citizen as president of Washington College. Later named Washington and Lee College. The liberal loons of today should try to be as magnanimous as Lincoln was. Anyone who advocates destroying a statue of Lee has hatred and destruction of our country in their heart. Stop and think -- is it best to ignore the statue should you dislike it or is it best to tear it down? That should be an easy answer for anyone who wants our people to get along.

Robert E Lee went to War continue the Souths right for slave ownership, Washington and Jefferson were Slave owners, so tell me how Robert E Lee was worse than the actually people who supported the ownership of other Human beings.

3. Jefferson was genocidal, and Washington smoked pot.

Sounds good to me; think of the money we'd save on the upkeep of these statues and monuments. I've always thought that erecting statues and other symbols are a complete waste of taxpayers money.
