Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Mark Murphy, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha, Mavis Staples, InWalkedBud. That last one is distinctive, but not in a good way.

If most distinctive is the only criterion here, the answers that come most quickly to mind are Louis Armstrong & Jimmy Durante.

    EDIT: Oh, and Tiny Tim!

~ Donald Fagen . ( Steely Dan ) Can't sing for shiito — but the stuff he writes would not be good without him.

    What about Bob Dylan?

And, to somewhat lesser degrees: Bing Crosby (who I don't much care for), Freddie Mercury, Bruce Springsteen, and Mick Jagger (though he doesn't have that good of a voice, IMO). Also David Bowie.

My jazz geek credentials should be revoked for leaving Satchmo off the list.

Loved her! I think many on here may be too young to remember her music

I never listened to him other than his Ring of fire (brilliantly covered by social distortion) and his redemption song with Joe Strummer and that was at the very end of his career so I couldn't tell if that was representative of his works. You can tell a Neil Young, Jorma Kaukonen or Dylan song after two words. Marty Balin as well

OK, I have been planning to get around to your and Turtledude's Cash covers, but had assumed you both to be fans of his. If it is the case that you both see the songs you posted on the other thread as exceptional, I won't put off any longer, my checking them out.

Trent Reznor who wrote the song

Reznor praised Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning," going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore."

Also - the video takes on more meaning when you realize that both Johnny & his wife passed less than a year later

Buddy Holly, certainly had a distinctive voice.

Elvis Costello is easily recognized, by those who know who he is.

I would say Roy Orbison-- except, I just found out, myself, that I'd mistakenly thought that the song, "You're Only Lonely," was Orbison's singing when, in fact, it is J. D. Souther.
