This country has arrived at a national popular vote by adding up the results of state elections for 150 years.

 

Electors are the way the States cast their votes. They represent the popular vote of the State they represent.

 

I would find it extremely ironic if Trump won the popular vote but lost the Electorial College vote. It will be interesting to see how many conservatives who supported the EC in 2016, suddenly want it gone, and how many liberals who shouted for its demise, suddenly feel it's the greatest institution in the world.
