The Public Safety Department of the state of Maranhao says in a statement that it all started when referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from a game last weekend. The two got into a fist fight, then Silva took out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died on his way to the hospital. VIOLENCE IN BRAZIL: Protester dies at Confederations Cup The statement issued this week says Abreu's friends and relatives immediately "rushed into the field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body." Local news media say the spectators also decapitated Silva and stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field. Police have arrested one suspect. - - - Updated - - - Note to self, don't get involved with soccer. Its a devil's game.
Well, you know, there is a legend that the game of soccer originated from english boys who were kicking around a dead danish soldier's severed head who had been captured in war. King Edward III banned soccer in 1365 due to the growing incidents of violence accompanying the sport.
I thought the old ways are long gone, reminds me of the headhunters in remote jungles and the sacrifices of the Incas during those primitive era of Brazil.
It might have more to do with the fact that the referee stabbed a player for arguing against his verdict that set the players friends and relatives onto the field to kill the referee. It wasn't the game.
No it doesn't. They weren't angry over the game, they were angry over this man stabbing their friend/family member. The game was unrelated to the friends/families vigilantism.
Not sure if deserves to be in this subforum, but nevertheless. It seems to be good that we are so bad in soccer after all.
Those living in countries where football is not very popular must keep in mind two things : 1. Football is the most important of the non important things in life 2. A man can change nationality , religion, partner , face , occupation , political beliefs and even sex but he will never change the football club he supports.
But it all started with a challenged call from the game. Did it escalate? Sure, but the first domino was the game.
I watch quite a lot of soccer on TV and I feel safe in stating that many of those referees are as bent as nine Euro notes. There is NO WAY that a man in full control of his perceptory senses could make such ...er..decisions. Furthermore, Seb Blatter and his FIFA gang should be behind bars. They have deliberately stalled electronic monitoring because it makes match-fixing more difficult. They have given the world cup to a rich Arab state wherein it's too hot for a camel to cross the road, let alone play a game of football
I never thought of that perspective before. Also, just imagine the impact goal line technology would have on football punditry. It would put an end to many a football debate and all of the phone in shows that stem from it. Half of all 'experts' and pundits would be out of work at a stroke, not to mention all of the advertising revenue streams connected to it. But having said all that, I'm nevertheless personally opposed to the introduction of such technology for reasons that I won't go into here for fear of boring the pants off everybody else.
