Why do socialists see austerity as economic oppression, but never had any problem getting into all that debt in the first place?

I think this is a legitimate question that deserves an answer. Seems like many on the left want to run up huge compounding budget deficits, and then they scream with rage when it all comes to an end and the government makes cuts to start paying it back.

I think perhaps some on the left have this naive notion that they can spend spend spend, and then hopefully leave all the debt for the rich to pay later. And then they are surprised when the government eventually makes severe cuts.

It just seems like stupidity and irresponsibility to me. You think the rich should pay for your spending, but do not have the courage to make them do it before you rack up a huge debt?

The government isn't in debt, the problem is the rich got big tax cuts and aren't paying their fair share.

After all, if it wasn't for government building all the infrastructure, the rich wouldn't have earned that money. Or, government providing all those dollars in entitlements, who would buy from the rich?

The rich got that way because the government made it possible for them to, so they should pay their fair share - 90%.

    I was being sarcastic.

If the libs stop spending, and the country doesn't fall into chaos, they were wrong.

The libs talk about raising taxes, but never have raised them enough to pay for their spending (the Clinton "balanced budget" came after welfare reform, and during the tech boom, not after a tax increase).

They know the voter wants freebies, and isn't willing to pay for them - thus debt.

There is only one reason that a country runs a deficit, it's because they don't collect enough taxes to cover spending.
There can be different reasons for this, they may need to spend large amounts because of a war or revenues may off because of an economic downturn, or it may be a political maneuver, to create a "debt Crisis" to use to achieve political goals that can't be achieved through the ballot box.
In the long run, taxes = spending, deficits = surpluses.
In the short run, this is not always apparent.

Funny you should mention that. Wasn't it Ronald Reagan who made his aggressive tax cuts without cutting spending (at all)? Resulting in the debt tripling? And yet, you claim that it's the liberals who spend irresponsibly. Didn't Bush fund his wars with loans? You can't blame your debt all on the Democrats.

I don't. I left the Republican party years ago, as did a lot of people. Many joined the Tea Party, many joined the Libertarian Party - both want spending cut significantly.
