The concept of aether was used in several theories to explain several natural phenomena, such as the traveling of light and gravity. In the late 19th century, physicists postulated that aether permeated all throughout space, providing a medium through which light (& gravity) could travel in a vacuum, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aether_(classical_element) Alternate spellings. Aether. Ether. Like generating a new kind of electricity from Dark Matter.
Wow...so some unseen force with no confirming data or observation to back it up? What a crazy idea, if only someone could note a reason for it's existence that would be something.
Well just as the neutrino changed definition from the sixties when it was a particle with no mass or charge - Dark Matter theory = aether/ether. The reason for its' existence was postulated as a medium for light and gravity to travel. Today it balances equations. Dark Matter theory = aether/ether. Please don't troll me. It's late. I'm tired. I have provided a link. You can search more. I don't believe in defining an elephant by its' effects around it when an elephant has never been seen.
I do not troll...I am however using sarcastic humor to make a point. Aether was postulated and dismissed at hypothesis as new data was understood to make it untenable. Dark matter is in hypothesis and still to be dismissed or confirmed.
Yes, Although some here take Dark Matter as gospel. So I say, call the equation filler aether/ether. The stuff of the before time now better understood, or not.
Using terminology long debunked and meant for local phenomenon to discuss modern universal concepts would do nothing but confuse an already confusing issue.
Ether was a hypothesized to exist so as to explain the transmission of light. This idea goes all the way back to Aristotle. It was assumed that some medium of propagation was needed. They didn't understand that a collapsing magnetic field produces an electric field. And a collapsing electric field produces a magnetic field. So they assumed that like sound, light needed some medium to move through. It is not even remotely connected to the concept of dark matter. And it wasn't just some arbitrary idea. There was good reason to think it existed but there was no hard data. When Michelson and Morley demonstrated that there is no ether drag, we needed Einstein to explain the paradox. There is hard data in various forms for dark matter; to show that the gravity is there. We just don't know what is causing it. Frankly, what you believe is irrelevant. Science is based on evidence, not opinions. Physicists are looking for the the most likely explanation based on the science we know. It may be that a fundamental discovery is buried in this. We just don't know.
