I know I am going to get a lot of grief for this, but the findings of a new study on caffeine completely contradict my direct experience using caffeine--it also contradicts the views of many doctors.

Every time I drink caffeine these days (it's a recent development), I get palpitations a few hours later, without fail.

This isn't the first medical study I've taken issue with, but it is the first time I've known for a fact that it can't be correct. I've put this theory to the test a hundred times, at least, and I've yet to not have the palpitations. When I don't drink caffeine, I can go days without experiencing any palpitations. With caffeine, it comes on strongly and scares the (*)(*)(*)(*) out of me.

I should also note that alcohol completely stops them, so I may have to drink alcohol on a daily basis in order to prevent these flutters. Two glasses of wine a day versus medication sounds like the better bet to me.

Thoughts? Have you ever seen a "study" and thought it was complete bull(*)(*)(*)(*)?

never did keep me awake, I can drink a coffee before bed and no effect.... mom though, it seems to give her a boost and jitters and she can not drink before bed

i think it just effects different people differently, just like amphetamines calm hyperactive children down, but others it would have them bouncing off the walls

Yeah, it definitely gives me the jitters. It doesn't make me hyperactive at all, but it makes me more anxious.

    I love caffeine, too...

Too bad it now gives me palpitations. It pisses me off that I can't enjoy caffeine like I used to without having an emergency drink around in case they show up. These days,I always make sure I have ready access to alcohol if I'm going to drink caffeine.

Anyway, this study is complete bull(*)(*)(*)(*), and they are parading it around as if it's a fact.

Yeah, I didn't used to get them either, but the problem with the study is that they claim there is no connection. They are generalizing FAR too broadly.

    I'm a cynical skeptic.

Whenever I see such a study, I always question the motivation, and funding. When Phillip Morris stands up their "scientists" in white lab coats to reassure people that smoking is actually good for you, it's best to dig a little deeper before you take up smoking. 99% of "studies" have some ulterior motive, which is usually money. I'll bet you can find a link from that study to someone who has a vested interest in promoting caffeine.

I'm telling you that it is the caffeine. It is the only variable at work, in my case. I do not eat different foods when I drink caffeine. There is only one common factor, and it is caffeine.

    - - - Updated - - -

    Exactly.

I'm not saying caffeine is bad for people, in general, but it clearly isn't great for everyone.

At work, I've always wondered, if I swapped the decaf coffee with the regular, which group of workers would be most adversely affected. The caffeine crowd would be laying around with blinding headaches, while the decaf crowd would be climbing the walls. :D

    Yes, probably true!

It works to a degree, but I know the effect is overstated. For instance, I always know the alcoholic content of whatever I'm drinking, based on how it makes me feel. When I go to a bar or restaurant where the drinks are weak, I start complaining or ordering doubles if I don't have a nice buzz after 3 drinks lol.

"Why You Might Not Want To Mix Alcohol and Energy Drinks"

    http://time.com/3677044/alcohol-energy-drinks/

"The caffeine rush in energy drinks makes a drinker look and feel more balanced and coordinated than their drinking would suggest, leading some drinkers to believe they’re not actually drunk. "

should be careful when mixing the two

BOGUS. THat is the lamest excuse for drinking I have ever heard. Get checked, STOP self doctoring, at least till you have a DIAGNOSIS.

I don't see anything wrong with having two beers a day, especially if it kills the palpitations.

Alcohol is not medicine. If you need alcohol AS MEDICINE, by definition, YOU NEED MEDICINE. So, that being the case, you neede a PHYSICIAN, to determine if the REASON you are using ALCOHOL as HEART medicine, is dangerous.

I hope you consider me a friend.

Definitely. We don't agree on much, but you are a nice person.

Once my insurance kicks in I plan on seeing a doctor.

Alcohol can actually cause palpitations and heart disease too.

Long-term, heavy drinking can lead to heart disease
Drinking more than the lower risk guidelines regularly and over a long period of time can increase your risk of developing heart disease. This is because, drinking at this level can:
Increase the risk of high blood pressure. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol causes raised blood pressure which is one of the most important risk factors for having a heart attack or a stroke. Increases in your blood pressure can also be caused by weight gain from excessive drinking3.
Heavy drinking weakens the heart muscle, which means the heart can’t pump blood as efficiently. It’s known as cardiomyopathy and can cause premature death, usually through heart failure4. The heart may be enlarged5

Binge drinking can make your heart beat irregularly

The name Holiday Heart Syndrome was coined in 19786 but it is misleading. People who have it certainly won’t be having a leisurely time. In fact they might feel like they are having a heart attack – characterised by severe pain in the centre of the chest. It gets its name because cases of the condition tend to increase around holiday times or after weekends, when people tend to drink more7.

Holiday Heart Syndrome tends to come on after episodes of heavy drinking – usually at least 15 units (about seven and a half pints of 4% beer or one and a half bottles of 13% wine). If this happens, your heart starts to beat irregularly making you feel breathless. Your blood pressure changes, increasing your risk of a heart attack and sudden death.

Everything in moderation. I try to keep it to 3 cups of coffee and 2 drinks a day MAX. Of course there are exemptions like holidays, reunions, etc. Caffeine definitely causes palpitations and can even cause psychosis. Of course drinking too much alcohol is even worse and harder on your body. It is literally a toxin or poison and the feeling of being drunk is your body telling you it's not good. Especially when you drink to the point of blacking out and throwing up. Some people are wound up tight and need to drink. There is also Valium that some doctors say acts like alcohol but is less harmful. This is what they give alcoholics to come off alcohol. If you are drinking too much, it's best to pick up more hobbies if you want to be healthy and live a long time. Going to the bar is not a "healthy" hobby. It is especially difficult after college to cut back on drinking for some people. Doctors recommend no more than 1 drink per day for women and 2 drinks per day for men. I believe in the near future, they will recommend no alcohol but good luck trying to ban it.

I have gotten them before but after drinking a pitcher of iced tea. Coffee never bothered me when I was young but I avoid a cup after 6pm now because it causes problems trying to get to sleep.

"I'm shorry oshifer, I've had a lot too much coffee today"

    Now, now, calm down:roll:

Thank god you don't smoke, as it seems the only drug you don't have some problem with . My prediction is you will give them all up, rather abruptly and then have a much better life for it. I've seen this happen before. People whom it bothers, even just a little, seem to eventually just get tired of all the hassle drugs puts them through. It's the people who drink and drug "quietly", the ones who never seem to have a problem with it, that you have to watch. Might be that drugs don't cause some people any difficulties until they like sneak up on you, and then you've become dependent and can't let them go

Maybe it just affects everyone differently, but it doesn't change my heartbeat whatsoever.

Yeah, I use to get that too after drinking coffee then....Decades later I found myself in the ER with a BP of 200 and my heart doing a jig in my chest. If your BP is a bit high, that could be the reason for your palpitations. You might want to see a doctor.

Thank god I've never been pulled over for drinking too much, but I have been woken up, asleep in my car, by campus police. I didn't go to jail because I had the presence of mind to throw the keys in the backseat before I passed out, but I came close.

Yes, I'm having trouble pulling the needle out of my arm as we speak lol.

Like everything else, I tend to operate on cycles. Lately, I haven't wanted to drink, but I will certainly be drinking this weekend for ACL.

DON'T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN I'M ALWAYS CALM!!!!

That is why I'll be working out like a dog for the remainder of my young life lol.
