An American Airlines jetliner made an emergency landing yesterday in Kansas City because a flash drive was found in a bathroom. An airline spokesperson said that since 9/11, everything unusual is suspicious. Why was that a concern? What's suspicious about a flash drive? How can a flash drive pose a problem for the security of an aircraft?

    Overreaction?

Suppose a terrorist had made a flash drive that when inserted into a laptop PC it would cause the laptop to burst into flames? The pilot may have overreacted but at least the aircraft didn't crash. When you hold 100 people's lives in your hand it's a lot different than being a Monday Morning QB. I cannot fault the pilot because I didn't have to make the decision.

Because the person who lost their flash drive could totally freak out and hold everyone hostage until they got their term paper back I suppose.....

Wow, research and sources are often a help.

And it was not a flash drive, it was a camera.

Any time something suspicious is found inside of an airplane, it now lands as soon as possible and is searched. It does not take much of an explosibe (especially if it is a shaped charge) to rupture the outer hull of an aircraft.
