I go limited, the guns present in Open are far beyond my interests. I look at my firearms as self-defense tools, and I think the Open Division removes them from that category as light triggers and such are not suitable for self-defensive weapons. - - - Updated - - - And M855 is usually a little bit cheaper than most other 5.56 ammo. That being said, my four center fire AR's will not eject steel cased ammo.
It's good that sporting shooters are posting, to support the fact that guns are certainly NOT just for killing. There are "goofing off" shooters like me and the guys I know who are also not in the "just for killing" club. Think of all the billions of shotshells that have been fired at clay pigeons by people who have never killed a real pigeon!
Everyone in production shoots minor, so it's a level playing field. Shooting minor in limited, open, or ss is where you are handicapped.
Then you comprehend why the M855 would be purchased. - - - Updated - - - You are the one dismissing the concerns of the voting populace as nothing more than paranoia and scare tactics. It does not matter if a politician does not have sufficient votes to enact legislation that they wish to see become law. What matters is that these politicians are apparently trusted sufficiently to be reelected time after time after time.
yep that is true. 9mm is about the only thing that runs well in production., Limited is 40 though I won the area shoot one year (albeit 20 years ago) shooting a 45 ACP in my class. I just wasn't ready to buy another reloader. I was shooting the 155 bullets so my Fred Craig Para really didn't have any more recoil than a 40 and none of the stages were such that 1-2 less rounds per mag mattered
You still don't understand. Neither one is all that lethal, in that both are FMJ, and neither one fragments at velocities much less than 2,700 fps. The ONLY reason why M193 EVER got a reputation for being at all effective was because way back, when we still had mounted cavalry, the first M-16's had a twist rate of 1x12. The bullets were barely stable in flight, so they were more likely to cant (certainly NOT "tumble") in tissue. M855 DOES fragment, at around 2,700+ fps. What gives me heartburn is when someone who obviously knows something appears not to be aware that truly effective bullets are not to be found at all in military loads. Not yet, anyway. I'm not focused on killing things or people with my guns, but I'm sensible about my bullet selections. For my general use stuff, I use the Hornady 55 gr. PSP, with a cannelure, because Midway sells them to me for 10 cents each. Being a soft point, they are effective down to around 2,000 fps. Another favorite is the Hornady 60 gr. PSP, for 13 cents each. They're more accurate than the 55's with my hand loads, and notably more effective on the various mediums I test with. Again, being a soft point bullet, they expand very well at lower velocities. The best bullet I've loaded in 5.56 is the Sierra 65 gr. Game King. It's designed after the 69 gr. Match King, but it has a soft point, with a tapered jacket, to control expansion. Max. effective range with the military FMJ ammo is around 120 yards. By that, I mean that the bullet does not deform or cause anything but a clean hole beyond that. With any of my bullets, it's closer to 300 yards. You should already know all that.
I have seen back to back comparisons, same rifle, same distance, the M193 yaws in less distance than M855.
How would you determine that? By observing keyholing in targets? What was the rate of twist in the test barrel? I recall a thread where someone else discussed this with you, and they referred to the construction of the Russian 60 gr. 5.45 bullet. It was pointed out that in the Russian bullet, there is a significant air pocket between the leading end of the lead core, and the enclosed jacket. This was done to ensure instability and exaggerated yaw upon impact. I believe that if the M193 had exhibited superior wounding ability, it would have been retained. Instead, we went with the M855 (bad choice) and are now moving onto a 62 gr. JHP, now that the IDF has done a bit of "field testing".
And yet common knowledge M193 as being more lethal than M855. And it also pierces AR500 armor at close range. M855 does not.
