Oh, yeah--I understand the drill. Mucking stalls, mowing baseball fields, cleaning fish cases in a supermarket at 3:30 am, etc. are boring as hell, too.

Screw feeling the pride of earning your own money... I learned one thing from what I did as a kid and that was that I had zero interest in earning a living that way. I put myself through university so I could get a comfy inside job.

I'm an economist, not a lefty.
Have you ever seen a house or a car make anything? We're tying way, way too much of our capital up in dead assets. We have an advantage over the rest of the world in wealth and our people are tossing it away on large houses and big cars.

When I had a sales staff, a lot of time went into training. As to R&D, that depends on the nature of the business. Take your gas station attendants, how much training must they have and what R&D can be done? When I worked at several jobs in heavy construction, what training could be done? It would have interrupted the work being done.

Sure, R&D is going on daily at your significant silicon valley companies. But most do not work in Silicon Valley.

We have roads. Repairs are called for. Believe it or not, government manages to get into the way of progress. Look at the boondoogle of the Jerry Brown high speed rail system. Some have visions of riding a super fast train next year. Won't happen. It won't be running by 2025 either. It might not be running by 2035.

Presidents are hired to manage government, Not all the states nor your life nor mine. Do not ask of Trump things he has no authority over. Just my tip of the day. Trump can try to talk Congress into voting for and funding such things. Take his Wall. That was approved when Bush was president. All he needs now is the funding. I think Bush got approval around 2005 yet here we are and it is 2018. That is Government for you.

My son has a job and is well paid. About to retire in fact. While he saves a lot of his income, he has managed to accumulate around half a million dollars in retirement capital. Guess how much his home increased in value over about 12 years? Went up from $185,000 to around $900,000. His dead money made him money and provided shelter. He has managed to now own 3 homes. And left his retirement capital alone.

You made yourself happy and do not fear rain as you work. Try heavy construction with threatening skies.
I have held inside jobs as self employed now since 1967. I got out of the rain, snow and heat for a good reason. The money on construction jobs was higher than most make. But of course when my grandson graduates the university in 2019, he says he can start at $150,000 per year. Of course that is starting pay.

Lenders offer 15 yr terms on homes and I normally recommend that term. Cars are dead assets. They go down in value. Some collector cars can increase but most passenger cars get worn out and really hold next to no value over time. But keep a car for 25 years. Buy the right car and you can do that.

She ate up what Obama told her. Repeated back she is an illegal and he proceeded to lecture that she still must vote. Some call Obama smart. Why would a smart man instruct an illegal she must vote?

Of course, I'm talking about businesses where training and R&D make a difference. I worked with a taught computer science. There are millions of workers who could be more effective if the had better computer skills.
Obviously, many businesses only benefit by R&D and worker training done by other firms.
I've driven I-5 from Los Angeles to San Francisco many times. Flown many times, too. We don't need a subsidized high-speed rail system. That's not the kind of infrastructure we need from government.

We should be encouraging Joe Average to invest in assets that generate wealth, not dead assets like motor vehicles and large family homes.

I'm not talking about housing being a bad speculative investment for individuals, but about an investment society should discourage relative to other choices. As it is, we actively enourage investment in residential housing. We also discourage investment in stock markets by failing to adequately regulate their integrity.

Good idea as long as we don't replace him with someone who incompetently manages the economy.

That's fine for people who want to do that work.

I've built houses there is nothing on a house I haven't done except pour the concrete for the foundation. I'm not allergic to outside work other than I learned that your body tends to break down if you do a lot of it at the speed you have to do for employment. I worked for a time as an auto mechanic.
Our daughter and son-in-law commercial bankers. Lots of money there. Inside work, too. My daughter took my advice and got a business degree.
