Unintended consequences of Trump's trade war. Trump was warned that this could cost jobs.

Tampa Bay Times could be just the start of major cost-cutting to compensate for higher newsprint prices.

So far Trump does not appear to be winning the trade war he started. The USA's allies were the first to suffer from the tariffs.

If the goal is to put American newspapers out of business, this is exactly how you do it. You listen to a hedge fund up in the northwest, you apply onerous tariffs on the lifeblood of papers - newsprint thereby contributing to the decline of an entire industry, which has & is facing headwinds beyond newsprint pricing. This industry employed around 430,000 less than 20 years ago - it is about 165,000 now and declining.

I really don't think Trump understands how tariffs work - and who actually pays them, in one way or another. Onerous and stupid tariffs are a tax on the consumer, pure and simple.........

You don't seem to understand the Chinese government which will support industries that are hurting either financially or by other means.

The Chinese economy has a huge advantage over the USA in that their ability to change policies and direction to accommodate economic, trade, and technology fluctuations is much faster than the USA.

Kinda looks like American newspapers will have to start buying Made in the USA newsprint.

We can't fix this dispute with the Americans because we have a corporate welfare problem at home.

Maybe the CEO's there could cut their paychecks by 1% and save those jobs.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Bureau of Labor Statistics latest report shows that employers issued 1,316 “mass layoff actions” in September affecting more than 122,000 workers. Most of these layoffs were either directly or indirectly related to Obamacare and the constant increase of government regulations.

To the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars? I don't think so.
Yeah living in a free society really sucks, don't it?

The major reason China has a huge advantage over the USA is because of the tremendous trade imbalance they have enjoyed for years and years. That's kinda what we're trying to fix here. Problem is people like you hate your own President more than China's.

Well why do you hate Trump? And, setting aside the matter of hate, why are you taking China's side here?

You should leave politics behind at the shoreline. History will see people like you as being the reason for America's downfall. (Of course, that's what you want so perhaps you are to be congratulated)

You ascribe more political and economic influence to me than I actually admit to. If you look in the mirror you will see the person responsible for America's downfall if indeed you are that influential.

Yeah, a little bump in their prices should cover the difference. Of course, this is the real result we should expect from Trump's tariffs - higher prices for consumers. So long, tax savings.

In a thread about layoffs you don’t have a comment about the 122,000 people laid off because of Obamacare? Or did you believe everyone would be just fine if they reorganized their household budgets, considered whether or not they really needed a cell phone, and got retrained for the hundreds of thousands of green jobs like Obama said?

The only tariffs should be put on companies importing products that outsourced American jobs.

Trump's next $100 billion tariff dilemma: hit Wal-Mart or Apple Store?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumers may be about to directly feel the effects of the trade fight started by U.S. President Trump with China and other countries this year when a new list of Chinese imports to be taxed is announced in coming days.

After imposing import tariffs on solar panels and washing machines in January, Trump moved to levy steel and aluminum in March along with about $50 billion in other goods.

After China responded with a list of U.S. goods that would be subject to tariffs, Trump raised the stakes on April 4 by directing the U.S. Trade Representative to consider $100 billion in additional levies.

But a Reuters analysis of Chinese imports shows that to quickly reach $100 billion worth of goods to tax, Trump may have to target cellphones, computers, toys, clothing, footwear, furniture and other consumer goods, prompting price rises at U.S. retailers.

“There is no way to avoid consumer products when you’re thinking about how to hit $100 billion worth of imports coming from China,” said Hun Quach, vice president of international trade for the Retail Industry Leaders Association which represents U.S. retailers.

The tariffs are not only going to cost jobs, but cost us more at the store. If things are going to get better from this, they're going to get worse first. He's setting us up for an economic depression.
