In recent weeks, Republican legislatures in roughly half a dozen states have either adopted or advanced bills purporting to take aim at the teaching of critical race theory, an academic approach that examines how race and racism function in law and society. Conservatives have made the teaching of critical race theory a rallying cry in the culture wars, calling it divisive and unpatriotic for forcing students to consider the influence of racism in situations where they might not see it otherwise.
Nonetheless, educators say the newly adopted and proposed laws are already forcing teachers to second-guess whether they can lead students in conversations about race and structural racism that many feel are critical at a time the nation is navigating an important reckoning on those issues.

    Wow.

GOP Legislatures are trying to censor what teachers can discuss.
I thought the GOP was against censorship.

    What gives?

You cannot understand the impact racism has on our social political and legal institutions if you have not been taught how it can and that it has already.

This is the ' just don't look for cockroaches' theory in pest control and extermination.

CRT is truly the greatest propaganda effort in my view by foreign antagonists. I'm convinced that somewhere, we will learn that pro-Chinese and pro-Russian forces are funding the operations. Because there's no greater fault line to exploit and attack in America then the "race" discussion. CRT, 1619 and all variants are to me, a foreign operation with the intent to attack America's fault line, make America a sectarian and therefore divisive state similar to Iraq/Afghanistan.

And teaching white people that they’re ALL racist and arguing that blacks need an advantage in order to combat said racism... will ensure that the racism from the 50’s and before comes back in full swing.

And given the fact you folks don’t seem to have a problem with your blatant racism against whites, bringing back the old days seems like it’s justified.

If you want to teach racism isn't real, slavery wasn't so bad, black people are thugs and criminals, then form yourself a private school and teach it with your own damn money not our tax dollars!

And given the fact you folks don’t seem to have a problem with your blatant racism against blacks, bringing back the Affirmative Action quotas of the old days, seems like it’s justified.

    See how easy that was!

What value does CRT have? Today we're hearing about schools moving meat just to get them through their 12 years of school and when they graduate they can't read or write, so why waste time with CRT which does nothing for anyone?

And if you're teaching CRT, what you're telling the students is that some of them are victims and it's the other students who are victimizing them. I'm not sure what that does to their self esteem, but in a world where feelings matter to the left, then making kids feel bad seem to go against that notion.

So if you have a kid in school, the color of his skin will determine if he is a victim or victimizer.

There are so many different ways I can respond to your post. Instead I'll ask you what you think the kids are being taught and what the purpose is.

Quote me on this or admit you tell lies. No one is teaching your strawmen. Go spot some "racism" in the clouds or your cheerios, I'm sure you'll find some.

It’s cute you think if you ignore the problems they’ll go away. They won’t, they’ll only get worse.

Nobody is advocating for this. If you have to make up lies that aren't true to make a point, you have no point.

You couldn't defend this if you tried given that it's the right that actually advocates for all people to be treated equally regardless of race....not the left.

Make a bunch of **** up and pass it off as truth....yes, we know it's easy for you.

That's the strawman quote that got me going in this thread! You know better, and so do I. You knock it off and I will.

Nor have they acknowledged a problem exists, much less offered an alternative. Put up or shut up is what I say.

as long as they are teaching black racism and white racism are both bad, have at it, but both need to be taught at the same time

I am sick of the racists on both sides, and we need to get past this

It would be nice if someone explained what CRT was. I'm not worried about it, so my lack of interest won't send me searching for answers. They'll come.

Anyway, from what I do understand, it's a focus on our history with regard to the contributions of blacks. Much had been deliberately erased, like the Tulsa Massacre, and who among us was taught about the plight of slaves in the early colonies? We all know about Jamestown, but they left the slave part out in my history books.

I don't see it as "racism bad" from either side. I seriously think by portraying CRT as a "good vs evil" proposition, one plays into its detractors hands.

As ignorant of CRT as I am, I will bet a month's pay that no child is being taught he's bad because he's white. That's irresponsible hyperbole propagated by racists. Teaching a racist's kid anything black is what upsets the parents. Has nothing to do with the kids.

me too, I think back to my history days in like 3rd or 4th grade, learnign about the civil war and then watching roots.... it did not have the intended effect, way too young for children to watch that

of course back then they taught us sex ed in 5th grade by showing us VD pictures that were disgusting - that was all they taught us - they separated the boys and girls and then gave their leson to each

We didn't get "health" until second semester 9th grade. That was '72. The only thing I remember is having to watch a baby being born. Poor guys went to the cafeteria afterward and they had spaghetti. Sorry. Lol.

I'm not settled on anything regarding this issue. It is an issue. Black history is American history. How to teach it seems to be what's being challenged. Or is teaching it at all what people object to?

There are no easy answers that I can see. I think you underestimate children and the abilities of teachers. Just my POV. I don't see any value in teaching young children only positive things about US history only to hit them with the ugly later on.

It also depends on what we want from our educational system. Do we want values taught alongside facts and events? If we leave out 99% of black history, is that not a certain value? If we teach the history of all people who settled this land, including but not limited to blacks who did so in chains, is that not another value?

Can teachers instill the value that historical truth must be revealed to prevent its repeat?

These are concepts a 5th grade prodigy understands, but not many else. I still have an issue teaching only the traditional positive aspects of our history.

5th grade: Yay Jamestown. What brave freedom seekers.

9th grade: Oh, about Jamestown. Slavers.

I just have a problem with that. Don't have any ideas, but that's definitely unacceptable to me. Skipping 9th grade is not an answer.

as long as we teach both the bad whites have done and bad blacks have done, let's let kids know all races can do bad things, and we should work together to prevent it in future, make neither feel responsible for the past and look towards the better future that can be

personally I think if too young, it creates fear in children, so we have to be careful

and yeah, we had a real health ed when in jr high too

how about teaching about Obama, should they teach he used the N-word, or hide that part of history as it's dangerous for white kids to say it - there are many things that are history, that are best not taught to children

and Trump, all the bad things he said, too many to list - grab em by the....
