That's a surprise. Meanwhile in 1989, I bought a Compaq 286 laptop for $3500, discounted from the retail price of $5000 (Thank you, that lower Manhattan Orthodox Jew consumer electronics outlet). My Compaq ran DOS and had a 20mb hard drive. Like the Volt it was state of the art, but not a practical purchase for most people. (I needed it for business). The rest is history concerning what happened in that market. Like my Compaq, the Volt is also out of reach of most people, but it's nevertheless a breakthrough model for future automotive propulsion design. (100 miles to the gallon!?!?!). And like all technological innovations, the costs will come down over time. So even if the Volt perishes, its breakthrough technology will persist and be refined and incorporated into new vehicle models until battery technology advances to the point where the gasoline powered component can be tossed aside. To the extent the federal government contributed to the Volt, I find it a much better investment of my tax dollars than the hundreds of billions of non-value-add dollars poured into Wall Street at the end of the Junior Bush administration to correct the disastrous mistakes made by our "captains of finance", and also to preserve their bonuses and perks.” Click here
Wow, thought this would be a hot topic. Come on all you guy and gal defenders of the bogus US "free market" status quo. "Man up" and comment.
I never heard of Spieckerman before. To people at far left Huffington Post anyone to the right of Mao looks like a conservative. Anyway, I think real conservatives will continue to have a problem with Government Motors and the electric ObamaMobile for the very sensible reasons listed in the story.
one battery technology improves, the electric car will follow in large numbers but like your old laptop, as the hard drive\memory\cpu improved, so did the PC
There has been an interesting turnaround by some conservatives. I was quite a bit shocked when I saw this piece by Fox News: Can the Chevy Volt Help Win the War on Terror? http://nation.foxnews.com/chevy-volt/2012/03/26/can-chevy-volt-help-win-war-terror
"ObamaMobile", lol. You do understand the Volt purchase tax break was authorized by Junior Bush, right? Or are you suffering from Fox News-Rush Limbaugh dementia?
