Mexico has not exactly been sending the "best and brightest" segment among their population. The ones who are illegally crossing the border into the US tend to be the less bright ones and more generally criminally inclined. This will probably leave an impact on the genetic pool.

The area wasn't gun free, there was a state trooper on the scene who got in a shootout with the gunman before he entered the school. In fact multiple police officers were outgunned. Plainly put, the guy wasn't carrying a weapon designed for self defense, he was carrying a weapon designed for offensive force.

We have a 21st amendment, yet federal law still says you have to be 21 years old to buy alcohol. Why should an 18 year old be able to buy an assault rifle and high capacity magazines, isn't the 2nd amendment intended to be well regulated?

So why isn't this a common problem in other first world countries?

The second most common cause of death is vehicles, which is something that we legally require licenses, speed limits, and seat belts to operate. Perhaps we should have similar requirements for guns?.. or we can make guns as commonly used as cars, and trust that the numbers won't go up any more
