In addition to the erstwhile Trump lawyer, subpoenas were also sent to Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell and Boris Epshteyn.

 

Subpoenas are designed to gather data... nothing there about any wrongdoing.

 

Did I imply there was? No. Do I think the subpoenas will be respected by all involved? Not likely.

 

I do think it's fair to say the focus of these subpoenas is the legal team behind the coup attempt.

National Archives On Verge Of Giving Trump Docs To Jan 6 Committee

The National Archives will give the Jan. 6 Committee its first few documents from the Trump White House this evening, absent a court order.

Trump has sued to block the archives from releasing documents from the first three tranches of records that archivists have identified as relevant to the committee’s subpoena. Courts have agreed to freeze the release of those tranches, even after Trump has lost the case at the district and appellate court levels, pending his ongoing appeal to the Supreme Court.

Now, Justice Department officials say in court filings that an additional fourth tranche — containing a whopping four documents — is not covered by the rulings that freeze release of the initial three.

If a court doesn’t block release by 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, the Department said, the records will be released.

The Supreme Court late Wednesday afternoon rejected a request by former President Donald Trump to block White House records from being sent to a House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.

The ruling, which Trump cannot appeal, sets the stage for more than 700 pages of Trump White House records to soon be sent by the National Archives to the select committee.

Trump in late 2021 lost efforts in Washington, D.C.’s federal district and appeals courts to block the panel from getting those documents, and then asked the Supreme Court to take the case.

He had argued unsuccessfully in those courts that he had the authority as a former president to invoke executive privilege to prevent disclosure of the records and cited that argument in his application to the Supreme Court.

Jan 6. Committee Subpoenas White Nationalist Pro-Trump Activists

The Jan. 6 Committee issued a subpoena on Wednesday to far-right activist Nick Fuentes and one of his associates, the panel announced. Fuentes and his associate Patrick Casey were on the Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, and also attended pro-Big Lie rallies in D.C. on Nov. 14 and Dec. 12.

The panel says in the subpoenas that the two were calling “for the destruction of the Republican Party for failing to overturn the election.” Fuentes is an avowed Holocaust denier who has spent time with Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ). He leads a group called the “Groyper Army,” who were also present at the Capitol.

After Jan. 6, the group splintered between Casey and Fuentes, with members expressing fear over “FBI infiltration.” The panel notes that on Jan. 7, Fuentes tweeted that “The Capitol Siege was ****ing awesome and I’m not going to pretend it wasn’t.”

Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham shared some new details of what ex-President Donald Trump was up to pre-Capitol insurrection with the House Jan. 6 Select Committee during her interview in early January, according to the Guardian.

Grisham told the committee that Trump held off-the-books meetings at the White House that apparently only a few staffers knew about and were mostly scheduled by then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, the Guardian reports.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who chairs the Jan. 6 committee, on Sunday said that the panel has had conversations with former Attorney General Bill Barr. During an interview on CBS, Thompson was asked whether the committee intends to ask Barr about a draft executive order reportedly handed to former President Trump that would have directed the Defense Secretary to seize voting machines and authorized the appointment of a special counsel to investigate them weeks after the 2020 presidential election.

Thompson replied that the committee has had conversations with Barr already and that it has also talked to individuals at the Department of Defense.

“We are concerned that our military was part of this Big Lie on promoting that the election was false. So, if you are using the military to potentially seize voting machines, even though it’s a discussion, the public needs to know, we’ve never had that before,” Thompson said. “And so any of these individuals who are participating and trying to stop the election, the duly election of a president, and if we can document it, we will share it with the public.”
