The point is it's not a particular important date as people are trying to make out to go along with it. It had nothing to do with any slaves except those in Galveston and other Texas cities were liberated afterwards. Texans knew about the EP at the same time everyone else did, two years earlier. There IS a proper date when slavery ended and it is not this date. The claims it is should be corrected.
You cannot correct a claim that wasn't made on this thread in the first place. The lady clearly states that the Emancipation Proclamation referred to the slaves in Confederate states. The event on this date in Galveston, Texas strikes a chord with people, so they decided to celebrate on this date. That is completely their prerogative. If you choose not to celebrate Juneteenth, so be it. No one will care but if you want to find something to correct, start with the inane notion that Juneteenth and its celebrants need correcting by you. Your assessment of the appropriateness of the date has no bearing on the occasion and rightly so in a free society where people can celebrate when, what and how they want.
I was surprised to learn that there is actual significance to this date. Up until now, I thought it was just another made-up holiday like Kwanzaa.
By Jan 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment passed both chambers of Congress. In Dec of 1865 it was ratified, officially freeing all slaves in the country. If people choose to celebrate Juneteenth, we can. I think he's just trying to derail the thread or make himself the center of attention.
If people were allowed to gather inside to loot then people be allowed to gather inside to celebrate accomplishment. https://www.fox2detroit.com/video/697105
Well, thanks for participating in the thread! I've got some errands to run / other things to do! I might be back later!
.....and there you go again proving my point. You just can't do it can you? You just can't stop making it about your opinion. You just can't stop telling black folk what they should be doing. Freed slaves started celebrating this in the C19th and their descendants continue to do so. A group of freed slaves picked a day, based on a specific moment in emancipation, and the celebration spread. The 'proper' date is whenever the people who were actually impacted by slavery chose to celebrate it and when their descendants choose to celebrate it. That ain't you. You could just join people in celebrating the end of this most vile of institutions. You could even just shut your yap and let others celebrate without you. But no, can't be having black folk celebrate the end of an evil white run institution when you could make it all about your utterly irrelevant opinion. I get that you don't understand the problem. How could you. That would require a complete shift in your worldview.
I didn't notice earlier because of the looting comment, but you made two thoughtful contributions to the thread with the historical document and the film festival info. I also think you're from MI like me. Sweet!
December 6, 1865, is when slavery ended in America. Blacks did not become citizens until July 9, 1868.
If it helps Black Americans, I'm for it. I don't know about "shortly" but still, makes a good point.
