    I think the storyline could have been expanded if they had used an aircraft carrier.
    or better yet put the set in space and use a starship.

    A starship would make this an entirely different type of show. This is one grounded in the "real" world and the here and now.

    As far as an aircraft carrier goes, it would be more self sufficient, since they are nuclear powered and have years of power, but also more likely to catch the contagion. I think the other ships that survived are the worlds nuclear sub fleet. The US ones are on six month missions totally isolated from the world, so I would imagine all of the nuclear subs that were out to sea survived with their crews intact.
