There are quite detailed rules for determining which expenses of the President and First Lady are personal and which are business-related. These are much more strict than what small buinesses for example are allowed to get away with in claiming business-related deductions in their massive annual efforts to defraud the taxman. As I have noted earlier, if the President is working late and asks the White House kitchen to send up a pastrami sandwich, he has to pay for it.

Thanks principally to Barack's book sales of course, the Obamas are a wealthy couple. In your lingo, it has been hard work that made them rich and they should be able to spend their hard-earned money however they please.

The costs of security details are meanwhile not the Obamas' to turn down. They are required by law to comply with the protocols established by security officials for their protection. Those are in effect and costing taxpayers money 24/7/365 anywhere and everywhere. These are part of the cost of having a government at all and have nothing whatsoever to do with the Obamas.
