What the heck is going on in our country? New Orleans is a vacation destination which you would think would be protected and kept safe so the tourists and their dollars keep rolling in. With this sudden boost in murders plus NO's reputation for having one of the most corrupt police forces in the country, who'd want to go there?

Also, the left will tell you that crime is often a result of poverty and no jobs, but Obama is touting his booming economy and low unemployment numbers, so that can't be it. So what is?

New Orleans is the 3rd most dangerous city in the US after Detroit and St. Louis. He really needs to be a lot more realistic about the issues his city is facing. His excuse tells me he's not particularly fussed about doing something about the problem.

Just a point about this - the US murder rate is at it's lowest point since the 1960's. So despite the hype on TV the US is getting safer.

US homicide rate at 50 year low

Even with these murders, the death toll in NO thru the first 7 month of this year is under 100.
    There were 274 in '03 - 424 in '94.
The violent crime rate in NO has been less during the Obama Presidency than while Reagan was President.

So this seems to fall in line with a better economy.
So what's your damage on this issue?

Ever watch "The First 48" on A&E?

That show follows the true story in the murder cases that detectives are assigned, and once the case starts it's considered hot - and solvable - in the first 48 hours.

They all focus on big city crimes, like Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, Memphis and of course New Orleans.

No question about... the New Orleans episodes were the nastiest, most brutal - and so damn young.

Murder rates have fallen all over the US since the mid 90s, especially where concealed carry is allowed. I'd mention demographics, but that would be considered racist.

I used to work in New Orleans several months/year back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Since Katrina, businesses have fled New Orleans and I have only done 2 jobs there since for a total of 3 days of work. Schoolbus Nagins ran off businesses while his kids attended private schools in Texas.

well lets not use averaged numbers, to indicate safety overall... safety in the suburbs and rural areas is at a record low rate, while safety is decreasing in urban areas... and one of the reasons why the murder rate has decreased, sure some of it is to people being less violent, but a fair chunk of it also is advancements in medicine and the ability to treat gunshot wounds more effectively... because there has actually been an INCREASE in shootings, but little increase in deaths relative to the increase in shootings...

    http://www.vpc.org/studies/moreguns.pdf

so while the suburbs and rural areas continue the decline, the urban centers are reversing the trend and it would be much worse averaged out if there wasn't a decline in those other areas to counter the increase in the urban centers... so no, the US is not getting safer, its simply compacting the problem in even greater densities to certain areas...

so while you contend we're safer because we don't have more deaths? I would suggest the number of shootings is a better indicator of relative safety? rather than outcome of those shootings... I mean poor aim doesn't make me safer does it? better medicine doesn't make me safer from shootings does it? actual shootings matter...

P.S. and for those who want to say "Obama" as the reason, it started during Bush, and simply continued into Obama... so please keep that in mind when assigning blame...

When I was in the military and stoked 87 miles from NewOrleans in the mud 1960,s there was a high rate of muders in thevCitybof NewOrleans. So these things go in cycles.

2015 had about a 12% upswing in murders - but that still puts it well below the rate when Reagan, Clinton, or Bush were in the WH.

The number of murders in NO is under 100 for the first 7 month of 2016 - if that rate continues, it would put at the low end for the last 30 years.

I worked in the area of government contracting for law enforcement products. Here's what I can tell you with certainty. In the areas of drug enforcement and gang enforcement, much funding disappeared. Beginning with the stimulus, which shifted a lot of money from enforcement to treatment and prevention, law enforcement efforts in these two areas has been severely affected. People won't believe this because of all the talk around DHS supplied military equipment and such. But that stuff isn't being used to catch bad guys. Surveillance equipment is used to catch bad guys. Anyway, I lost my job as a direct result of these policies and I saw several drug units disbanned. The enforcement is so low it would astonish the American people.

Obama just commuted 200 sentences. Do you think he's been trying to help the local police catch more of these criminals the past seven years or less?

You're being shown data for this year, in an obviously changing climate. That's the point, so don't bother deflecting with decades trends. There's another trend now.

    - - - Updated - - -

Yet over the past few weeks and months there has been an increase, and there are reasons why that need to be addressed not ignored.

No, they should not be ignored - but statistically speaking, it would be too short a time frame to be considered a "trend".

The correlation necessary is that areas with concealed carry have lower murder and/or crime rates than areas without. It doesn't exist.

I'm not against gun ownership, but the stats above could also be used to show that the availability of the internet has led to a decrease in homicide rates - or that
the availability of cell phones with cameras has led to the decrease in murder rates (which is not that far-fetched an idea if you think about it).

The murder rate is a good example of how we accept new normals. The decline from the late 80s was never enough. The goal should be pre-1960s rate. The increase has always been associated with gangs. The government's war on drugs is really a war on gangs. Gang members are America's true serial killers. Lessen gang enforcement, expect more murders.

    - - - Updated - - -

Technology has become a deterrent. That's why surveillance and monitoring of bad guys is so important.

    - - - Updated - - -

Gangs. During prohibition, high gang membership, high murder rate. Same in 1960s and late 80s-90s.

DB, I fully agree with you on the number of shootings being the real indicator here. But to push it a little further, I'd argue that each shooting constitutes intent and the shooter shouldn't get off with 'attempted' murder because the bullet missed the heart by an inch, or there was no traffic so the ambulance got there quicker, or when the victim got to the hospital he was immediately seen and didn't have to wait, etc. There are probably limitless reasons why a shooting victim dies sometime after being shot rather than immediately, so the crime a person is charged with shouldn't rely on chance or good fortune. Intent to murder should carry the same weight as murder in my opinion.

Regarding Obama (since I was the only one to mention him you must have been referring to me) I did that not to bash or blame him, but to eliminate the ever present excuse for violent crime which is often jobs and/or the economy.

well I can confirm from countless FOIA requests I have done on finances of my local departments, money does disappear and they can't account for it, now to be realistic there is always some small percent that is never accounted for, thats natural, sometimes folks forget to fill out forms, or send things through, but combine that with the intentional fraud and waste, and that couple percent is infuriating to see wasted, because they never say, we'll reduce our budgets as a result and find ways to increase efficiency to make up for that waste and fraud, instead they always make sure to spend every last cent whether needed or not, in order to ask for more next year... infuriating...

and please don't attempt to derail this thread and turn it into another "Obama" this or that... if you're seriously worried about 200 commuted sentences, I would prefer you focus your attention instead on the 200 plead down cases EVERY MINUTE of EVERY DAY that turns felonies into misdemeanors or class A felonies into class E felonies where someone who should be in prison for life is now out in a couple years to repeat the crimes they should have been locked up for all along... I'd prefer you worry about that than 200 commuted criminals from Obama, unless of course, your only concern is smearing Obama, then I guess that won't help you in your goal of political bashing...

P.S. disappearing money is also why I HATE that police get to seize drug money and equipment, because its caused them to focus on chasing the money, and not the criminals causing the quality of life for the citizens to suffer... they let smaller gangs get away with all sorts of things because they put their efforts on the top gangs who have money they get to keep when they bust them... so there is always another gang in place ready to take their position to keep this cycle going, until we stop policing that way, we won't solve this problem... they must go after ALL the criminals and not put more emphasis on the ones with money to seize... or else the cycle will continue to be perpetual...

Number of Americans killed by Islamic terrorists since 9/11 = 94.
Number of Americans murdered in non terrorist attacks since 9/11 = 182,000
