Hey I wasn't trying to trick you with that, I assumed you knew Duffelblog was a parody site. But I'd heard the same thing about stress cards for years...
I honestly thought the stress cards were real. Everyone in the Army talks about them as if they were real and I pretty much figured they were. Never really thought to actually investigate myself to see if the rumors were true or not I figured that since everyone talked about them like they were real then they probably were. With the current climate of this new "softer" military it really didn't seem that far fetched. Either way basic training is still way too soft for my liking and I think we need to change it back to the way it was when you and I went through it. This isn't one of those things to where I say "well I had to suck so I want you to suck too". Its about the fact that we need to create Soldiers who fight wars. If we have kids mouthing off to authority coming out of basic training then how are they going to act when bullets start flying? In war we don't have time for these kids to give us lip about the orders and instructions we give. We don't have time to deal with kids who don't have the discipline to keep going when they are tired and life starts to suck and they are stressed out. The basic training of today is allowing these sorts of people to slip through the cracks and make it to the force. We need to nip that in the butt right now.
I should have joined the Marines, I never had a lightning sword.
Although I admit I do think Basic has softened up since I went through it, the point of that Duffleblog parody is that everyone thinks that, regardless of when you went through. I'm not sure my perception matches up with reality. However I do agree that the way soldiers come out of Basic, not nearly as disciplined, is a real problem, and I'm shocked that it would still be a problem after over a decade of war. If that doesn't fix the system I don't know what would.
