ISTANBUL/HAKKARİ - Daily News with wires

Three people were killed in Sunday's PKK attacks on four different locations in Şemdinli district of southeastern Turkey's Hakkari province. Ten people were also injured

Three people were killed when four separate locations came under attack by alleged members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in Şemdinli district of the southeastern Hakkari province late Sunday.

PKK militants attacked Şemdinli's District Police Headquarters, District Gendarmerie command, Şemdinli 3rd Tactical Mountaineer Gendarmerie Brigade and a police checkpoint with machine guns and rocket launchers at around 10:00 p.m.

Soldiers immediately responded to the attacks. Intense firefights broke out between PKK assailants and Turkish troops in the district, that lasted for three hours.

Helicopters were sent to the area as reinforcements during the clashes.

Hakkari Governor Muammer Türker said three people were killed and ten were injured in the attack, Doğan News Agency, or DHA, reported. Among the injured, seven were soldiers.

The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
