I can smell them from here. They smell like emptiness.

Had they the intelligence to realise that family life would have kept those insideous urges to 'maternalise' in check, it wouldn't have to end in tears. Unfortunately these are the kinds of women who, even when they do have a kid or two, can't wait to stop parenting - and are the kind of grandparents who say they won't do the child minding because they're 'busy with their own lives'. Those 'busy lives' of emptiness.

The prisons and jails are almost entirely filled with children that had no father around.

Women can't teach their sons how to be men and girls need a man to instill confidence.

Don't know his, but mine is a man who doesn't feel obliged to be all things to all people, at all times. A man who allows himself the leeway to be one step removed from the hugs and rainbows sometimes, because he has 'hunting' for his pack to do. A man who is willing to protect, house, and feed - and is not afraid of that big responsibility. A man prepared to be useful in an entirely practical sense .. because he has the physical strength, and lack of caution, needed to do a lot of the things women can be reluctant to do. He needs to be able to build/hunt/protect, in other words. And he needs to be able to do those things on a background of good manners, respectfulness and respectability, and of generosity.

 

Exactly. And as mentioned, even when they do have a kid or two, they're almost always disconnected from them in some way. They don't often have strong bonds of mutual dependence, other than in name. They're lazy and selfish. They don't 'do' for younger and older generations, to anywhere near the degree that women in more traditional families do.

While I'm loathe to attribute this isolation-creating selfishness to a particular gender, it would be dishonest to ignore the role that maternal instinct plays. It's a VERY strong driver - even in women who are childless by choice (hence the cats). It's very much hardwired in.

 

I worked with a woman (Cat lady) who told her students to call her "Mama Christy".

Shes no longer employed but it was creepy.

 

Great example! They're too lazy to be mothers (and that's always what it comes down to, when it's a choice), but can't stop themselves from doing the interfering that goes with a maternal instinct. It's an ugly combination, because such interference HAS to be underpinned by the relationship a mother has to her child. It has to be driven by that very singular and very powerful kind of love, to be reasonable and beneficial. When that mother/child love is missing, it becomes interference driven by a need to scratch an itch - without accepting any of the responsibility that usually accompanies it. It becomes an entirely selfish exercise.

I think we do have such books, they're called Young Adult fiction. Little kids who were trained to be "resilient" find them a little contradictory though
