Quite possibly the dumbest thing that happened in the world for the hour it was announced.

Well it's less about tolerence and more about "rule of law" I personally do not think that Atticus defended Tom Robinson because he cared about him or that he didn't consider black people as inferior.. I think he did it out of a sense of responsibility to uphold the rule of law and the ideals that all criminals deserve a defense and equal protection ujnder the law.

Same reason why John Adams defended redcoats following the Boston Masecre. He hated the British government, but saw it as his duty to ensure that everyone has an equal chance to defend themselves. (ironically the soldiers are now known to have acted completely in self defense, against the colonists who had been throwing rocks, broken class, and other things at them)

We can, however, at least be well assured that nobody is fat-shaming the woman in this picture

Allowing opposing sides to debate an issue is a good thing and should be encouraged, but at the same time, inviting a parent to debate or explain beliefs could be a risky thing.

The teacher should provide an environment that encourages curiosity and critical thinking, but should not use the classroom as a dais to preach personal beliefs. It is vital that students form their opinions using skills they've learned rather than simply accepting what they hear from an authority figure. Students are still in the developmental stages and even if they express some very firm beliefs, they can be influenced by a teacher or speaker.

I was asked many times what my beliefs were, and I never answered. It wasn't the fear of angry parents, but the understanding that my opinions were not relevant to the process and it would be unprofessional of me to give my thoughts.

Did you read Go Set a Watchman? Atticus Finch's attitude towards Blacks in that book was parallel to Bob Ewell's. It was a glimpse of a White patriarchal and racist society that Harper Lee suggests she was forced to accept.

What if we allowed all books and then taught what they mean.

    Hmmm.

    Censorship is NEVER good.
