Trump Now Wants into TPP? Really?

Trump's announcement he wants into the TPP is for real? Why would he ask back in now when he won't be able to negotiate terms and our entry is subject to the the approval of all the countries in the pact, including Mexico and Canada? Why would he put us in that spot while he's still negotiating NAFTA?

Seems like an unforced error to me.

 

There is a simple answer to your questions. Trump is stupid and incompetent. Leaving the TPP was a huge mistake and he did it without thinking.

The TPP is a regional trade agreement involving the U.S. and 11 other Asian-Pacific countries that together comprise 40 percent of the world's economic output. The TPP's economic objectives included liberalization of trade in Asia, market reforms, and strengthened trade rules to support America's competitive industries and accord with the modern realities of digital commerce.


But the TPP also aimed to further the country's strategic interests in at least in three ways. First, U.S. leaders and strategists saw it as a way to strengthen the country's leadership in Asia by complementing its diplomatic and military power. Second, the TPP served as part of a broader effort to shore up an international order premised on market economics and liberal values. Third, the pact aimed to strengthen key partners; most notably Japan and Vietnam, by spurring badly needed domestic economic reforms and boosting growth.


The TPP thus served as an important component of the rebalance to Asia initiative. It also informed the U.S. approach to a rising China. By strengthening its leadership, bolstering its alliances and partnerships, and revitalizing an international order, Washington hoped to provide China strong incentives to integrate into and support a U.S.-led order.


America's withdrawal from the TPP in January 2017 marks a major blow to these ambitions.

Members of an 11-nation Asia-Pacific trade pact said Friday they opposed any renegotiation of the deal to accommodate the U.S. should it decide to rejoin at a later date.

By using threats, Trump has angered other nations. Nations do not respond well to threats, intimidation, and rejection.

Which would explain why the great deal-maker has signed only one trade agreement in 16 months. That agreement was signed a few weeks ago and it is with South Korea, a nation that depends upon the U.S. for its very survival. We have 28,500 troops in S.K. The deal is hardly a major accomplishment.

 

Yeah. If you are going to get into a trade war with China, it is nice to have some regional partners.

In a very short time Trump has managed to tick off all of our trade allies and worsened relationships with our enemies. Israel is the only one happier but they are going to be extremely disappointed when Trump doesn't really back them in Syria against Iran.

 

I don't think there's any spin Trumpites can put on Trump's handling of NAFTA and the TPP that makes him look good.

When he cancelled US participation in the TPP, I seriously doubt that he actually even knew what it was. At least once during the campaign, he ranted that being in the TPP would put us in bed with China. In a campaign filled with such stupidity,, it was just another one on the growing mountain.

I love it when the Trump talking heads agree with trump, then the same day Trump changes his mind and they try to claim he was right then and now ( probably cause the NDA they signed will not allow them to disagree with Trump) - Trump does love his NDA's

As time goes on, he seems less and less aware of basic things he should know as President. The TPP is an important trade agreement and you'd think he would have been thoroughly briefed on it.

 

I think Trump wants back in, but some of the TPP nations aren't interested in us participating.

Trump couldn't possibly comprehend the nuance of the TPP.

Any "brief" that is longer than one page (double-spaced with pictures) is beyond the intellectual capacity of his simple mind.

Trump's only plan as potus is to get revenge on Obama for his humiliation at the correspondents' dinner and to rig the system to benefit and protect his own interests. He doesn't care about the consequences to the country.

 

Or they won't renegotiate the treaty, showing how they're unfair and want to take advantage of this country.

He'll say we didn't bail, they forced us out by being unreasonable and trying to take advantage of this wonderfully generous country. Fortunately, he was elected and stopped Obama from selling out thr country.
