Sweden is a terrible example. They're suffering horribly.

When did I say any nation could 'withstand' it? No country will endure that and come out the same as it was. I would have thought that was blindingly obvious, yet here you are commenting as though it's a shock and an outrage.

    1) It's not that simple, at all. They're not just gambling with their own lives. Every person who leaves their house gambles with the lives of others, as well as their own.

    2) It won't survive in the same form, no. What do you want .. to survive and rebuild? Or be crushed by the virus?

Because work means movement of people, and movement of people means contagion. Besides, if their borders are even partially open, it'll take very little time before their advantage is completely lost.

I'm not American, don't care for Trump, and loathe Progressives as much as the next sane person .. but I have to agree that any politician who wilfully exposes his/her constituents to this virus by premature relaxation of restrictions, should be held accountable.

America has food security. You're a huge nation, and can produce all you need to eat.

You have no idea which ones smoke. Which ones have immune deficiencies. Who had heart surgery last year? Of course healthy people CAN die, but according to the numbers it is highly unlikely. You can die driving to work. Go check your odds.

Exactly. That's what happened during WWII.

Find a different way. Remember, in the 20thC many people lived through both the Great Depression AND WWII. They survived, so can Americans.

We have NO IDEA how many are actually infected. We only know those who have been tested and there are uncounted millions who could have contracted it and only came away with cold symptoms. You know that. We all know it. Doctors have stated it many times. Our estimates are only based on who we can test so it is a certainty it’s far less deadly than our current data is telling us and that number is going to drop lower and lower the more data we gather.

thats why we need lots more testing, as healthy people who have the virus can spread it just by talking, and then kill someone or make them very sick

Doesn't have to be a hard closure, just a law. Make it illegal (with hefty fines), and that alone will reduce travel by a huge margin.

And your health system would collapse very very quickly. Long before even a fraction of that total could be treated.

The idea is to reduce it's proliferation in the community, so that partial re-opening can happen (under strict rules, of course) .. and then wait for a vaccine. The vaccine is the goal, not 'eradication'.

If the deaths of tens of thousands of your countrymen is your idea of fun, then I suppose it is. I'll take the boring, every time.

Almost all but the child and the Chinese doctor (who almost certainly didn't die from COVID) and the child look overweight. I'd bet my life some were also smokers, drinkers, or very unfit. IE, lifestyle related poor health. It's important to keep pointing that out, to remind people that being compromised means not being in the best health you can be. In a country like America, that could be 60% of people over the age of 30. That's the percentage these fools are threatening, when they push for early abandonment of restrictions.

You call the collapse of our economy "economic hardship"??? You're talking widespread poverty.

Let state's call their own shots. We'll all reopen if it makes sense, which it does for many. If other states want to become economic Somalias...let 'em.

    .
But you really can’t get it from just talking unless you’re right on top of someone. You have to spit on someone and if we’re wearing masks it cuts that down greatly.

By the time this is “over”, the actual death rate is going to be less than 1% and we’re going to seriously reevaluate what the cost truly was. Sweden who hasn’t shut down their economy is not really fairing any worse than other countries. Could get worse obviously but their local economy isn’t suffering the same with similar death tolls....at the moment.

What we’ve done so far has been the right path. But at least discussion of restarting things is happening. And It has to happen soon before small business can’t recover. Farms are wasting so much food because restaurants aren’t doing the business they need to. We can’t afford farms shutting down.
