Given that many states restrict abortion almost completely now, shouldn't women be able to get their tubes tied on demand?

Many doctors refuse the procedure until a woman is of a certain age (circa 30) and/or has already had one at least child.

There don't seem to be any such restrictions on vasectomy.

    Wonder why?

I wouldn't put it past some really devout fruitcake to choose to interpret the bible in such a way that things like vasectomy's are affronts to God and therefore should not be allowed. And if it's bad for a man, it's damn well bad for a woman. Doesn't have to make sense, just has to feel good.

In that case why are not more men having vasectomies? I mean they can always bank sperm first

Vasectomy reversal is around 95% successful. Tubal ligation reversal is more like around 65% successful. There are a lot of mitigating factors of course, but generally speaking a vasectomy is 'less permanent' for men than tubal ligation is for women. Its likely that many doctors arent comfortable with rending a young women permanantly sterile, given she has so much time left to change her mind, whereas its a lot less likely of a commitment for men.

Also, is this really a 'restriction'? Or is it just harder to find a doctor who will help a women sterilize herself? Typically 'restrictions' is used refer to laws and regulations, not people choosing what they will or will not individually be party to...

The biggest issue is that she will have permanent scarring of the fallopian tubes ergo her risk of future ectopic pregnancy increases markedly

It is because the percentage of women who get it in their 20's who say they regretted is is much higher than the percentage of women who get it in their 30's.

I don't think that it would help much. Just because somebody would have an abortion doesn't mean they never want a/another child. And it's hard to be sure, definitely women who seem really sure they'll never have kids in their 20s change their minds in their 30s or early 40s.

Probably the best approach for both sides is to promote easy access to reliable contraception. This reduces abortions more than laws against abortion. Part of this equation is universal coverage and knowing the pros and cons of all available birth control options, and to have these convenient and covered by insurance.

    Major agreement here.

This means education. We like to pretend that school kids live in isolation from the opposite sex!! Therefore, we can't teach the topic??
