Often do great athletes go through their whole careers, pretty much, unrecognised, sometimes because they represent an "insignificant" team and sometimes because some other ****** is stealing the spotlight by being a more attractive commercial brand. Therefore, it is time to give these unrecognised athletes some recognition!

I only really follow soccer so my contributions will be soccer-players and there really is a handful of players to pick from here. My nominations are:

    Juan Roman Riquelme
The Argentine midfielder was probably the most intelligent playmaker in the game during the 00's. Since he never represented any major European club he went through his whole career being completely forgotten in discussions about "who is the best player in the world?" Such a shame. A true genius.

    Juninho Pernambuchano
Mostly only recognised for his amazing and unique way of hitting freekicks, often forgotten for the great playmaker he was. Great vision, amazing touch and amazing technique - fantastic player.

    Alex de Souza
He was sadly born into the wrong era of Brazilian midfielders. With the likes of Kaka shining through the whole 00's, it was really hard to notice Alex. Add to this that he spent his whole career in Turkey and you have the reasons he went through his whole, amazing career unrecognised. He really had everything and had he been called up for that Brazilian squad in World Cup 2006, I am sure things could've been different.

most underrate athlete ever had to be the great Wilt Chamberlain - we all know of his basketball greatness but it is often overlooked as to how great a volleyball player he was:

Greatest basketball player I ever saw. Acknowledged as the greatest volleyball player of all time. Also an outstanding track & field athlete. You just had to see him perform - the best ever.
