“We’re lending money we don’t have, to kids who will never be able to pay it back, for jobs that no longer exist”

No wonder so many young people, awash in college debt, cannot find a job.

    http://www.theblaze.com/stories/201...he-worst-advice-in-the-history-of-the-world/#

    quote:
“I’m not against a college education. I’m against debt,”

“I’m saying, to start your life [$150,000] in the hole, [$80,000] in the hole with your art history major…”

    Taxcutter asks:
Is it good national policy for the government to guarantee house-sized loans for students to study things that won’t help them get a job? What good is a JD these days? Or a degree in music history?

Would it not be more beneficial for both the individual and the nation for robust 18 year olds to pack up and spend four years in the North Dakota oil patch?

Some people seem infatuated with getting a degree and *******n it they are going to get it - Regardless if it helps get you a job, or there are even jobs in the field to begin with

A friend of mine graduated from engineering school at a time when some of his classmates were forced into taking jobs pumping gas just to have a paycheck coming in. It was also the same time when Phd candidates in organic chemistry were being pictured in national magazines papering the walls of their apartments with job application rejection notices.
But that time of the economy gradually passed and with its passing came projects like the Beaver Valley One and Two power plants and Nine Mile Point to occupy his time. With a real unemployment and under employment rate approaching thirteen per cent and a roughly only sixty per cent labor participation rate, how much worse can the economy get at this point? The future belongs to those who are prepared, not to those who simply intend to grab life's brass ring lying supine on their backs on a bed with their legs wide open.

We need a serious reform of the student loan program.

First, expand selective service to include women, make selective service registration voluntary, then limit Student loans to those who have registered for selective service (I think that's already the case except for women). That gives you your next draft pool of people who already owe the government anyway.

Set a max dollar amount limit to student loans.

Limit the acceptable majors to those that are in demand in the job market according to the Commerce Dept.

At least those that get the loans will be able to leverage them into actual careers and pay them back.
