When identity politics comes home to roost.

 

True, and there's something much larger(that I tried to touch on, but it doesn't appear to be loud enough.) And that is, we're hypocritical when it comes to our values. We say we value free speech, we say we value independent thought and passionate(but civil) debate. That's what we say.

What we do, is an entirely different matter. What we do, is we make outcasts of those with different views of ours. We call them monsters, irredeemable, etc and thus further push them out which sometimes can have consequences(radicalized violence.) I would argue for example, it is better that Rep. King is an elected member of parliament, regardless of his views then say as a member of the Neo-Nazis, or something like that.

The advantage of the multi-party system, is that even the most radical of voices have a voice. The issue in Germany was that there wasn't a voice strong enough to combat Hitler. Here, in the West? Very different story.

Point is: Embrace freedom, debating views and different views. It does better to debate that which you deem evil, then to make them an outcast and a martyr.
